Need some insite on filteration for 300 gallon + tanks ,,

Wet dry vs Cansister type Filters

Opinions Please. Wet dry possiable flooding is power cut , Cansister filter self contained ,,, what's your advance ,, setting up BIG TANK

Wet/Dry all the way for large tanks. You can plumb it so a power outage will have zero affect on it. My overflows are only just below the water level, so if the power goes out it just drains below them and stops, the tank stays 90% full and the sump has a few extra gallons in it but still isn't anywhere near overflowing.

Hard to beat a sump as long as you have the space for one. Myself I'll be going woth a combination of canisters and a sump on my 450g(thats is tenecor can ever get done building it:irked:)

SUMP.... No brainer.

Canisters area joke to clean and IF you plan on really stocking it you're going to have problems fitting enough bio. Plus canisters are going to cost you a LOT of money when comparing to a wet/dry.

Are you planning on having live plants or not and how much larger than 300?

If you're running a heavily planted tank and injecting CO2 you want to try to stay away from sumps up to about 400 gallon, after that you basically need one. If you are not using live plants of any type, or you are not adding CO2, sump all the way.

Also, don't discount that some of the larger canister filters also contain a wet/dry component, like the Eheim pro series 3s.

I used to be a powerfilter/canister guy until I built my first sump on my 300. I have yet to get a reading on any of my water tests once the tank cycled. I do think canisters can lend a hand with mechanical filtration though...
