I only just bought him two weeks ago and he was doing fine eating the and everything right up until yesterday i put a new plant in that floated on top of the water and this morning i go down to feed him and he is wedged inside it and dead... I'm guessing he got caught in it and couldn't get out.. I don't know what else it could be. His water was near perfect i fed him twice a day and he was acting fine right up until this.. I'm bummed.

Yeah just today to see its literally almost perfect 0 ammonia 0 nitrite about 10 ppm of nitrate. I'm really thinking its just that plant.

I could try to get a picture for you. It's a fake plant by the way not a real one.

I have used this product in the past in my tank, and I never had any problems. Did you wash off the plant before putting it in your tank?

don't think those plastic plant will give off any toxic substance to poison the water, if that's true then you can sue the place you bought them from or the manufacturer and be rich :)
could be that the rhom died and flow up to the plant then was wedged in it by the current. we may never know what happened. sorry for your lost man.

yeah it is possible for fish to die of organ failure. Poor guy may have just had a heart attack.

He was just fine right up until yesterday... i don't see what could of killed him that fast besides the plant. And no i actually didn't wash off the plant so since he was hiding up inside the plant if there was anything on it.. its possible that could kill him i guess.

I need to go get a new one now... not sure if i still want to go with another baby rhom or change it up. I was thinking maybe a spilo, but they are a bit more pricey.

you may want to clean your tank, filter and substrate (included everything else in the tank) very well and go through the whole cycling process again before you get an other fish, just in case it was some unknown chemical from the plastic plant that leached into the water and killed your rhom.

one time I added a plastic plant to a tank without washing, and the next day my favorite black lace veil tale angel was stuck in the plant and dead. Sounds familiar. Not saying there's a correlation there, just that I have experienced something similar myself. I didn't blame it on the plant at the time, but after reading this it sounds like there may be something to it. BTW when I rinse tank decor now, I put H20 in a bucket, then I add dechlor to the bucket, then I rinse in the bucket. I'm paranoid that the chlorine in the water sticking to decor will kill my bacteria if i just rinse in the sink. Maybe I'm crazy...

can't you just use old tank water to clean decors?

Hmm that does sound very similar. I wonder if being so close to an unwashed plant like that if it was releasing chemicals would be what would do it. Because I did notice he liked to get right up inside. Either that or he did somehow get stuck in there.

The plastic plant itself shouldn't release any toxic chemicals other wise store shouldn't be selling it. my concern is while it was hanging on the shelve in display could any chemical got on it? or perhaps some teens trying a stupid prank and put something on it?
if it is indeed the plant itself then you should bring it to the attention of the store or the manufacturer. I say sue those suckers for a million dollar :)

hehe you'd have to prove a million dollars worth of damages. Fish, despite being close to MFKers hearts, are considered property, and as such legal restitution would be limited to the amount you paid for the fish and maybe a little more (cost of the plant? maybe cost of the tank if you could prove you only bought it to keep that specific fish?). Something tells me no judge in the world would grant you a million bucks worth of damages for "pain and suffering" from the loss of a fish. ;)
