well i come home today and see a huge lump in my aro's mouth.. immediately go and count the rest of the fish. everything is there except a cobalt blue 4" discus. this is the second discus that has been victim to his hunger, and i keep him pretty well fed. guess i need to feed him some more though. immediately after he fully swallowed the poor discus he gobbled up some aro sticks.
still kind of shocked he fit a 4"er in his mouth though, there are a few smaller ones in the tank even. goes to show you nothing that can fit in their mouths is safe.

discus are kind of slow moving.. did you ever see the size of the arow mouth when fully open... enormous.. i don't think it will matter how much you feed your arow..the problem is the discus swim for the most part where he swims.. and he strikes ... once in the habit of this.. i think he will get them all eventually...sorry for your loss..those discus are expensive too...

yeah ive seen him "yawn" a bunch and his mouth is big, but i just cant see the physics of a flat round discus going into his mouth! but it happened, wish i could have at least witnessed it - would have been worth it to watch.
yeah they can be expensive, but i get them from the assorted discount bin for ~$10/each.. not too picky about colors.
you dont think feeding him more or moreoften will help this? hmmm, he better not eat my 6"er, that would be impressive... but in a bad way
Feeding him more will not help at all. There comes a time the arowana will eventually suffer digestive problems because you are feeding too much expecting from him as a well fed pet, not to eat discus. This is why I keep reminding everyone there is no point trying vague tankmates if you already can figure out your arowana will attempt eating them. If you lost one fish already, then expect to lose everyone eventually. Separate the discus as quickly as you can if you don't want to lose everyone.

I deffinately agree with Lupin. If you keep adding discus, you'll keep wasting your money and the life of a beautiful fish. And soon enough your arowana will choke on one too, then you'll have an even bigger loss. Seperate the fish.

I think like Lupin says... better to separate... and maybe add some bottom dwellers... for tank mates..

he's got plenty of tankmates.. 7 clown loaches, 2 full grown upsidedown cats, pretty big pleco and all the discus.
dont have anywhere to move the discus to so we'll see as it goes.

only thing you are going to see is a fat aro and no discus

Whether it has tankmates or not, it's either let the discus be eaten or separate them. You do not have much choice, sorry.

maybe you can take them back to LFS for credit or just give them to them for free since they are going to be fish food if you leave them...

you seem pretty calm about the fact that your aro will eventually eat up your discuss. put them in another tank or give them back to the LFS. use your head

Hi,sorry for your loss, but a 22 in. aro is not compatible with a 4 in. discus.
bad choice of mix... shoulda kept the discus in a separate tank to begin with... ima have to agree with others, use your head!

Fish101 - Fish is food! Whatever fish fit in other fish mouth is food! I'm sorry for your loss.

it is what it is fellas, no need for harsh comments like "use your head" required. i'll see if i can put in a divider in the tank to separate them. i do have some eggcrate lying around. thanks for the suggestions otherwise
they have been together ever since the aro was 6" long and 99.999% of the time the aro doesn't bother the discus at all. i've seen plenty of tanks mixed with aro and discus.

I have a 11" Leichartdi with discus, angels, clown loaches, bichirs, and archers. Funny how it does not attack the angels and discus but enjoy chasing away the archers when they come too close. I would advice trying to attach floating plants on suction cup and stick them to the side of the glass. This will decrease visibility for the aro and allow the discus to run for cover.
