I have just finished a new outdoor large pond, approxiamtely 800g, maybe a little more, and I didn't want to go with the standard fish.. What are some exotic ideas for the pond?

in what state??? and is it heated??
From N.C.?
Maybe try to go out and catch some brightly colored native fish, and return them to that location after the summer months?

or just have a smalle surface heater to keep the top unfrozen then you could keep your fish all year round
A few larger fish or a bunch of small ones?

If you could bring the fish in when it gets cold out you could have a lot of options. My uncle has 2 pacus, 12 tinfoil barbs, 2 oscars, 2 plecos and 1 albino channel cat in his 9000gl koi pond, and when it is winter he puts them in his 800gl pond in the basement along with the scale less koi.

I can't take native fish out of the wild....we have laws against that here. I can acquire a heater to use in the winter, otherwise its pretty nice here. I think it would be nice to have a community centered around a couple big fish, with large amounts of small fish on the side. I like the ideas of putting plecos in it, I have some big ones. Any large fish that wouldn't eat TOO many of the small ones?

I read a great article about a guy who had set up a gar pond. He had a couple specimens of I think three different species. Seemed pretty cool. Here's a link to the article: http://my.core.com/~garman/garticlepond.htm

I'm surprised nobody has suggested the Chinese high-fin shark, Myxocyprinus asiaticus:

They're temperate water fish that can easily withstand a Raleigh winter. The LFS in my area typically sell them w/ goldfish and koi as pond fish.
