View Full Version : Fancy Goldfish Pictures
Hello all,
I'd like to start this thread specially for goldfish as I return to the coldwater arena once more. More photos will come as I search for the tosakins, wakins, watonais and jikins. There are a few more strains that I don't mind having.
If anybody else keeps goldfish, please share photos.
Note:
Please respect our choices and let's not have goldfish bashing over how they look, etc. Is that clear? If you have nothing positive to say at all, please refrain from posting. Thanks.
Here's Felix. He's 4 inches I think excluding the tail which is 2 inches.

Here's Alessandra. She's much bigger and is ripe with eggs currently.

Here's my 3 Goldfish (actually my 12 yr old's but I take care of them). The one plain Goldfish keeps changing color every 9-12 months. He was originally dark brown, then a platinum color, then this pretty bright yellow. Now he's started changing to white. He can't make up his mind. We rescued him from a pond when he was the size of my smallest fingernail.

i tried to get pics but the monster moves too much for my cam. i will try again with a diff cam next time i go. but the best way to describe him is he has the head of a koi and the body of a comet goldfish. and is a real dark silver color.

They have hybridize before. They just look like fat Goldfish with barbels most of the time. Some say that Butterfly Koi are part of the result of Goldfish/Koi hybridization.

It's actually possible and has been done numerous times. My fellow AC staff, Flaringshutter keeps a hybrid she named, Sygnus. See this thread for indepth researches on hybrids. You'll see Sygnus there for the first time!

I know some do keep koi/goldfish out all yr long in cold states but never figured out how they survive.

You'd have to winter them if temperature drops at stiffly cold.

if the pond is deep enough like at least 4 feet deep.. that is below the freeze level of the soil... they go down to the bottom and shut down.. sort of hybernate... low low metabolism rate..and they do fine.. they do not eat at this time...so deep ponds are perfectly fine for them to winter in... as long as there is moving current on top so the pond does not completly freeze over leaving no room for gasses to excape.. but my pond is only 3 feet.. and i tried those de-icer plug in type things.. that will keep an open space for the gases to release.. but if you don't watch it all the time they could go faulty and not work... i just think it is easier to drain the pond into the garden.. and bring them in.. and my basement is heated.. so even better..

Oh so you do have to bring them in if freezing temps.
I know they are cold water fish but didnt know if they could handle temps in 30s for couple months.

I have to say its nice to see the goldfish on here. They can get to monsters too. I have 3 goldfish i used as cyclers over a year ago when I got back into fish and 3 shubunkins I used to cycle another time. I love the goldfish. Especially shubunkins. Its just hard to find good stock of shubunkins that look good.

Sorry to hear that, Rob.:( Could have been some predatory creatures such as water boatmen, dragonfly nymphs, etc. There are many outside creatures that can prove damaging, no matter the size, appearance, etc.

Okay looked them up and I have those in the smaller pond which means they are probably in the bigger pond. Looks like I have some work to do this weekend.

Don't touch them with your bare hands, Rob. They are nasty and can bite. This is why they are very damaging to large fish and ambush smaller ones.
Just wanted to add I finally got my dream broadtail ryukin.:) He recovered completely now after an accident involving a leaking bag.

You could use potassium permanganate to dip the plants there but there is also a risk of them melting from the solution. As for preventing completely, no, there isn't. You'd have to monitor your pond for those creatures and dispose them as quickly as they are spotted.

First... My Goldfish are predators. They are hunting the baby mollies and guppies. I moved the Guppies to another stock tank because my wife wants the guppies.
Here are some group shots I just took tonight. The last shot is the visitors that come every night and party loud... Also the fountain inthe last picture I am sure I can make into a Biofilter in the bigger stock tank.
Wow! That's an amazing setup.

After going to stores and going home emptyhanded in the last few weeks, a black oranda caught my eye as I spent my time testing out the reaction of the other goldfish to food in a shop. Of course, she appeared out of nowhere and I stared quickly at her surveying her fins, eyes, wen growth, etc. Everything she has, is what I exactly wanted. I thought to myself, "Surely, she wants me to bring her home" as she continues parading in front of me in delight so I shrugged off the "conservative" feeling and requested an employee to get her for me. I went home happily with her in tow. She's really hyperactive and readily joined the other goldies upon introduction!
Okay, here are the pics of my new goldfish, Velvet. Pictures don't do her justice. She's prettier than the pictures show and the photos are a result of my lack of knowledge over the settings of Olympus cameras. I had to tamper with the pics to darken them a bit because I hated the light background flash gave.

Great collection and variety. I'm a big fan of fantails. Common Red Caps and Lionheads being tops. Wanting to put a couple in my office tank that housed a baby Eastern Painted turtle.
Is a 20 gal. OK for a 18-24 month growout? Don't have the room for a larger tank at this time. Or, should i hold off and do a 90-125 when I get my basement:grinno:
Rob,
I'll work on getting some close up's of my Shubbies. Appox. a dozen in the 5-8" range. I have two that are 1/2 to 2/3 black. The black being the most rich, black velvet I've ever seen. I wish I could paint my truck their color. Here is an OK pic. of a few in early spring (don't look at the algae or pipe). The PVC gives shelter til the lillies come in.

I'd hold off and get a 125g tank. A 20g is very difficult to maintain when it contains goldfish. I quarantined mine in my 10-20g tanks for a month and the maintenance was rather tedious often involving twice a day water change as they stir the poop and eat like pigs around.:banher:

I removed the substrate to keep maintenance easier for me. Will add some decorative vases I think and then plants.
My new black ranchu, Loco. I wanted to add a panda moor but after 30 minutes of inspecting every goldfish, my head was about to burst and I decided not to get more instead due to indecisiveness. Will get more in time though. Loco is all by himself until he's a bit big enough to outcompete other goldies for food. I think he may be eating some of my baby mystery snails. Ugh! I may have to transfer him again if this persists.

I have a comet and a shubunkin but as they're in the pond, it's tricky to get good photos. They're sexually matured already and measure 6 inches.

If you haven't noticed I'm in love with oranda!! I only just recently branched off and started caring for a ranchu and lionhead. I'll have to find some recent pictures of my 3 current goldies in my 75g.

The one looks like a huge dalmation mollie lol...Nice fish!!

Nice goldies everyone!
I used to have a HUGE ranchu and two 4'' Ryukin.
Planning to get two ryukins soon.
Theyre my favorite.
:welcome: to MFK, Abby!
You have such gorgeous goldfish! Yes indeed. I noticed all your current photos show you are into orandas. I especially love the blue oranda. Perhaps she can get together with Summers sometime.:D Summers is my grumpy black oranda who is currently 6 inches in length and quite bulky as well. I hope to see your lionhead and ranchu as well. I have both as you've seen in Julian and Loco respectively.
Hope to hear more from you, Abby.

He's simply stunning, Vil! What do you feed him? High protein based diet helps accelerate wen growth. I suggest including vegetable matter in his diet as well. Try to make homemade gel foods or buy Mazuri 5M70 gel food brand and then Hikari Lionhead or Hikari Oranda Gold. I prefer Hikari Lionhead as it is sinking. Those Hikari brands can be used for orandas, crown pearlscales, lionchus, ranchus and lionheads but I also feed them to my other goldies with no wen growth development and it should work just fine.

I use hikari lionhead sinking pellets, i think i may have some hikari oranda gold mixed in, peas, beefheart on ocassion.
i used to feed hikari lionhead to my bichirs because it was so high in protein and it sunk.

Ahh..Nothing wrong with the diet. I guess this one is down to genetics.

My goldies! After my big pom pom oranda died, I didn't want another goldfish. Three months later, I found these two and now I'm happy again.

I did get my three new demekins, and despite the crappyness of these photos, they are amazingly beautiful. I will have better pictures once they come out of quarantine and into their new home.

I am still having trouble using Olympus so this is the best I could get of Summers. He is 7 inches currently and has changed colors into chocolate from rich black.

Wow! This is one of my favorite threads! I recently bought a pair of telescope buttefly pandas and a Ranchu, but one of the pandas didnt make it : ( Im glad I went back to Goldfish, after all the diff fish I kept Im finally satisfied with these fancy goldies, now all I want are more Ranchu! Oh yeah and a Rainbow wolf lmao
Do you have photos of them, big E? I am glad you're back to the goldfish arena. :welcome: to the club!
Yes, I know what you mean. Panda moors and ranchus are very exciting fish to have. I am sorry to hear one of your pandas didn't make it. I am still contemplating myself whether to get a panda moor or not. I didn't want to spend my money over something whose colors will eventually change. At least, my black ranchu Loco hasn't changed colors from his rich black tint yet despite the fact he is gaining size a lot.

I see a few bronze/unchanged golds in here. Very nice. Does anyone have a crucian carp? They're ancestor of goldfish (according to many sources). I'd love to see a captive/aquarium specimen. All I usually find on the web are fishing photos. :(

Here's the only pic I have of my one other goldfish.
Her name is Pearl, she's a perfectly symmetrical Ryukin, I still havent' seen another like her:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y46/SoCalSunset/DSCN1064.jpg
I wish I knew the genetics behind her, she's like a calico with no shiny scales, all her scales are the opaque kind, so she's 'clear' not shiny like most golfish.
Because of this, she looks pink because you can see light shining through her flesh. I'm a sucker for goldfish with solid black eyes :)
Im trying to get decent pics of my golfish, I never realized either how bad my camera is or how bad i am at fish photography! Im still looking for more Ranchu! *bump*
