Hey all, I've been fishing a small lake near a park, and was wondering what kind of lure I should get. I usually use live bluegill for bait, but the ones I catch are just too big, the bass follow, but won't strike. I've used many lures, jerkbaits, cranks, worms, they just won't bite. I think it's cause this lake is just heavily pressured. I'm thinking of useing some kind of bluegill imitating bait, it has to be somewhat small, cause they mostly feed one 1-3 inch gills. And has to look natural, the water is very clear.

Get someone to ship you over a few B52 Barramundi lures, they work a treat.

For a surface lure I would use popper, I have always had great success with them for largemouth. For bottom lure I would go with a crayfish or salamander lure. In between big rooster tail like baits. Depends on the lake and where the fish are located. I like to use the popper to start because I love the site of a big bass when it strikes!! Try near some lillys, some place shallow.

Get "SEBIL" swim baits or the spro swim bait with 4 joints on it. I have been killing the bass with the "SEBIL" and i seen kevin vandom murdering the bass on the spro. Both lures are kinda a pricey but the "SEBIL" arent to bad but the spro is 22-25 dollars.
If u can see the bass and they arent spawning throw a 10' U-tail made by zoom hooked finess style and i almost can quarantte they hop rite on it. GOOD LUCK and keep me posted

The bass have spawned, bass fry everywhere! Post-spawn now, worst time of the year, at least for me.
Those storm lures look good, maybe I'll try them out.
Thanks for the suggestion cichlid fiend, I may try it out, but in this lake if it doesn't look natural then they ignore it. The forage there is bluegill and some short of small shiner.

Hmm....still not sure what to use!
This lake is heavily pressured so maybe I should use something not natural. I never really tried it either.... what do you guys think?

Rubber worms or lizards work when a lot of fancy things fail. Try jigging them through the water or crawling them across the bottom. Dardevils are supposed to be great, though I've never done much with them.
I hit a TON of smallmouths on rooster tails when I'm trying for trout.
Last weekend I was hitting largemouth reeling a large shiner in on a bobber. I just reeled it enough to make it move a little bit, and a good sized one nailed it.
Contrary to popular belief, realistic lures aren't always better. Rubber worms, like I mentioned, are a tried and true method. Buzzbaits are also a GREAT bass lure, and they don't look like ANYTHING bass would normally eat. But they're bright, they're loud, and the bass react to them.
Don't be afraid to experiment with different things. And don't let those expensive super realistic lures sucker you in- I know more people who hit lots of bass on cheap lures than expensive ones.
And for the 1-3" thing, bass will generally eat fish 1/3 their own length. So if you're catching 15" bass a 5" minnow really is not too big. I've seen them take some HUGE things.

GULP! BEST BAIT EVER!

Hah, funny.
I've probably spent around 200$ on gulp in the last few months.
Heck, it never fails me in saltwater, but in freshwater....eh. :thumbsdow
I catch fish on it...but in the places I fish, bass are picky and could care less about the smell.

GULP! BEST BAIT EVER!
Gulp is ok but if you are like me I have a bunch of crap in my bag and they always seem to fall out of the bags they come in. With that being said gulp baits once out of their bags dry up horriably and to to me YUM baits are WAY BETTER

Oh I love yum!
I have maybe 30 bags of yum made things in my tackle box.
Gulp isn't the best for bass, but it's pretty good in saltwater.

Have you just tried a live minnow under a bobber? I think your making it too difficult man. Just keep it simple, around here the bait shops even sell rosy reds, some anglers prefer them more. Like the stingray keepers...the k.i.s.s method! Good luck! Maybe the fish can see your line if its clear and is pressured alot try 4 or 6 pound test. You should be catching fish if they are chasing the bait in, tease them a little, they should strike.
