So I have exactly 18 clown loaches (9" - 2.5") in a 170G tank, bare bottom but with large driftwood pieces for hiding. I feed mostly Massivore or Sinking Carnivore, frozen bloodworms daily and occasionally market shrimp. Most of the little guys come out most of the time, the medium
guys occasionally, large guys almost never. So I tried these steps:

lst: bought 10 tiger barbs as dithers = increased activity
2nd: feed bloodworms in open end of tank = a bit better
3rd: utilized a hagen aquaclear 70 (50-70G) powerhead = A CLOWN LOACH PARTY

They even started chasing each other around and fighting!!!!
Apparently, my two eheim 2228 did not produce sufficient current. But the powerhead seems overpowering, but they love it... even try to swim against it.

4th: Should I add some sand? Would I notice a difference in overall activity?

Glad your loaches are more active. Is this a bare bottom tank?

Yes. It is currently a bare bottom tank. Wurm, I thought about ordering that torpedo sand you love. Do you really think some substrate will help? Good thing is the powerhead pushes all the crap to one corner.
