What kind of common puffers can live in a 60 gallon for its life? I know puffers are brackish and need to be kept solo. What kind of puffer should I get, something Not too common like figure 8s or green spotted puffers. Something active would be nice, Ive had an arrowhead only move to eat and a green spotted puffer never stopped moving.

there are many puffers you could house in a 60.. a few of my favorite are the figure 8, suvattis, and mbu puffers:thumbsup:

id go with the suvatii after seeing that feeding video labled "puffer feeding" in the video lounge;)

I just found this site. Maybe it can help you. I didn't know there were so many freshwater puffers.

I don't think you can keep an MBU puffer for life in a 60 gallon as they get to be about 2ft long.

Pignose puffer or a target puffer....or a school of figure 8's....maybe even one or two green spots

Maybe peruvian puffers, c. asellus. But really, for personality you need to go big. An Mbu will need a tank much bigger than 60g. Get a Nile puffer (fahaka) and get a bigger tank as it grows. You won't regret keeping one!

If you don't want to go to a bigger tank down the road. A good size puffer for a 60 could be Tetraodon palembangensis. You can keep 3 or 4 in a 60 with really efficient filtration. Always maintain 25% more caves/visual breaks than the number of these puffers to keep aggression down. Most fights are staring conteats with the loser being the 1st to turn away. These puffers grow to 8-9"

Palembangs are coool.. The ability to mix them makes me want to stretch the limits and try a 'puffer community' with 1 or 2 palembangs and some of the smaller active species like S. Americans and/or Dwarfs (redeye)..

Ive kept a number of puffers over the years as well.. and if your looking for the 'complete' package puffer that is active, personable, and dosn't need a 300g+ tank when it's an adult, I'd go Fahaka.. Just plan on upgrading to a 120g wide in 6-12mo..

Miles, I think the palembangs would eat the SA and redeye puffers. But some people have kept them with Pignose puffers, T. Suvatti. I've also had no problems with plecs and palembangs in together.

Thanks for the input everyone. I went looking around some fish stores and it seems they only hae figure 8s, green spotted and some arrowheads (that dont even move). Is it OK if I get like 4 or 5 green spotted puffers in 60 gallon if there are many rocks and driftwood? I have an Aquaclear 110 on the 60.

I would do maybe 3 GSPs MAX in a 60g.. Most people will tell you only 1, maybe 2.. but we are MFK'ers and we like to push the limits.. These guys get about 6" and have a big bioload.. As long as aggression isn't an issue and you can keep up with the brackish/saltwater requirements and bioload, go for it!

Pretty common in the UK. They are a standard on a lot of singapore import lists.

Even so they should be easy to get hold of. Ask the com sellers. Miles or Fugupuff should know. They are puffer junkies too!
