It's cheap, it's pretty(my wife likes it), it claims it's non-toxic, but I haven't found any info on the makeup.

Your question reminded me of this post, where the OP said he'd been told it was not good for fish but had used it for a year without any apparent problems. Don't know its chemical comp but my thinking would be if it looks unnatural it probably is, and that's unlikely to be good for you fish long term. Then again most gravel is unnatural colors so...
