Well im kind of new here but i joined ages ago , I have brought my self a South american redtailed catfish , As i see meany of you have them but i am trying to pass my collage course (start later this year) on be coming a marine biologist and go in the amazon basen (peru) and find out as much as i can about these wounderful species of catfish , so if any of you have anything that could help me understand them better that would be great also my redtail is beeing shipped over at this moment and i am thinking of having him in a 5ft by 3ft by 2ft (3ft wide tank) , with a perruno catfish (as you would call them ?) would this be a wise idea ? also this is what i no about them!

the male redtail is a thiner build then the female gender, females tend to have much larger heads then the males ,
the larges redtail found with in the last five years was 6ft and 2" long found dead :irked:,
they are not a very "hardy" fish with water conditions as a large fish they can die easy .

The Red Tailed Catfish is commonly found near Rio Maranham but it can also be found throughout the Amazon system, which includes, Brazil, Guyana, Venezuela, and Peru. Its approximately 43.3 inches long on average.
The amienistic form, which is when there is absence of pigmentation, but no albino pink eyes, is only found in the young fish and it only lasts for about a couple of weeks. The fish then reverts to their normal color there after. How to identify each gender is unknown, although the tail color, which varies between red and orange/pink, and darkness of the top of the head, which varies from black to grey with black spots, vary from fish to fish. They are more likely to be due to their diet and their mood than their sexual differences. If taken for a pet they need to be kept in a temperature around 21.0-26.0 degrees Celsius and the pH level between 6.5 and 7.5. When feeding these fish the key is not what, its when. Red Tails should be fed sporadically. Once fed they become sluggish and the time to feed them can become gauged by the activity of the fish. Permanent activity will be present when they are hungry. Be careful with over-feeding because it is the leading cause of
death in this breed of fish. In the wild these fish eat fallen fruit, crustaceans, and fish. Tank furniture is not a necessity as they will swallow large rocks as they are know to but subdued lighting should be utilized. These fish are territorial within confined spaces and they are certainly capable of killing other tank mates. It is best for these fish to be
kept alone unless a large
aquarium is provided. Breeding is impossible within the confines of a tank,

As meany redtails dont get a good home they stop around 30inch long thats 13 inch of what they should be which is not very nice but they are great fish i would say a 3ft wide tank minamun for this fish as they are huge feeders also not very active most they day (some are) but when its dark they love there swiming space i would have one redtail in a 10ft x 6ft x 3ft for life that should be fine and it is my plan to do it with my redtail although indoor ponds are an idea i need to learn as much as i can about this fish so i will need him in a large tank that i can see into , so is there anything eles i need to no ?

although any pictures of the redtails you might have could you show them off ?

meany thanks .

Also i am seeing a lot of redtail hybrids and have come across these albino redtails !

Thanks to planet catfish for the pictures.

I think you've answered your housing question in your write up of what you already know! 5x3x2 with a peruno would be ok for a short amount of time for a juvie, but not for anything large! yes it'd have the width required but it still needs up and down swimming space.

What size fish are you getting? and how soon would a larger home be available for it?

I am getting a 1"-2" baby he will be in a 4t grow out tank (as you call them ) then if i cannot find the 3ft wide i will make sure i get at least a 2ft wide (for some months till i find the 3ft wide) but i no he will have a good fillteration as i will be getting a Fx5 so i am told these are the best on the market , is this true ?

meany thanks again.

Aswell i can just have the redtail in the tank then when ive got my upgrade get a large peruno catfish.

I have a TSN and RTCxTSN Hybrid both from 3", they would have outgrown a 4ft tank in a month from that size, the growth rate on them is amazing and RTC growth rate is very similar. you might get 6 months to 1 year out of a 2ft wide tank before needing to upgrade again. Stock tubs and metal framed (not inflatable!) paddling pools make good cheap ponds, a complete glass tank for an rtc would be extremely expensive.

Can't see an issue with them in the same tank as long as they have enough space, the chances of you actually getting a Perruno is very slim, a survey on here found that nobody on mfk has one! they're all marble pims! Growth rates and maximum size are very different on those 2 fish, my marble has only put on 2 inches this year but was 14" to start with, but still nothing like an rtc growth rate at a similar size.

I am willing to pay for the fish or i wouldent of brought him , i also will keep him on his own for the growing up till he is 2ft long , and im planing around 5 months till the big tank , would this be ok ?

meany thanks.

Sounds good to me. If there's enough tank space and the tank mates are big enough then they'll be fine. You read in so many places that RTC should be kept alone because of appetite/size etc, but as long as the space is good then they seem ok. just have a good hunt around on here and you'll see how others keep theirs.

They can be fussy some can but they can live with other fish ive none that for ages i just started fish keeping ive keeped fish but my uncle helped me load with them and showed me what to do :).

It's good if you have someone with experience to help. I just tried to learn through books on the behaviors of different fish then found that the fish i got hadn't bothered reading the same books as me! MFK is a great source of information, first hand experience from fellow keepers has taught me so much more (and how little i actually know!) than i could ever teach myself. Hopefully someone else will drop some knowledge on here soon for you and you'll be able to start building better ideas off that.
