here is a shot of what I believe to be Crenicichla Gaucho, we collected them in March with Felipe. We thought that we were collecting Creni Scotti, but some of them looked different. Please tell me what you think.

very cool pikes. ive seen a few listed as gaucho in the lfs by me but i definitely think they are mislabeled. they have 3 labeled as gauchos and all look different. so im clueless on what the gauchos look like.

Thanks for the comment, I would love to know for sure if there is a way to know what they are.

any ocelli on the dorsal fins. almost look like they could be dorsocellata.

how big are they?

BigPic

No dorsal spots yet, they are all between 3" and 4" they still have a long way to go before I can tell the boys from girls :)

Thanks, don't look anything like mine, but, mine appear to be quite a bit larger, Maddog10 knows what he is doing, I assume that he got them from someone that went to Uruguay or Argentina, I don't think that he has been himself.

Thanks, can you tell me what makes you think that? we thought they were all Scottii, but, there are pretty major base color differences. I will see if I can get a shot or two of the ones that I am pretty sure are scottii.

Hi Ray!
I vote for C.scottii....!
Do they show the black line sometimes??
Anyway...they come from the "right" region...I am sure they are C.scottii.

Hug!

Hi Felipe! These ones never show a black band - but, that could be because of mood, I will work tonight on getting some pics of different ones for comparison. Thanks for the input so far!

good to know, I always thought that the bronze colored ones were the Gaucho and the grey ones Scottii? I guess I wasn't paying proper attention! I will still try to get more pics of the individuals.

I am going to need to bump the temp in the tank now, they are not growing as fast as I expected!

i think BigPic's on the first page are scotti's and the ones i posted yesterday were labeled and cr. gaucho at the lfs.

I know it has been a while, here are a couple shots of a "male" not sure if I even have any females. . . Maybe this will make it easier for people to judge???

Thanks, they are really awesome looking, my pics aren't doing them justice, the "yellow" flecks on the flanks are truly gold in person, I will eventually capture it. . . I really do hope that at least one of the smaller ones turn out to be female :D

BTW - I hope that "eh" wasn't a canadian crack  Nice one! I totally missed it at first!

Btw...you should read THIS (http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/5491/scottipage.html) . Vinny is pretty top notch when it come to Crenicichla, and he does say a few interesting things about scotti that made me raise my eyebrows. Like them being in their own group called Scotti with two other pikes, Cren. gaucho and Cren. prenda.

I'm innocent!!! Hahaha! I can't help it, I love talking canadian! I say 'eh' and 'aboot' all the time. My friends have just learned to ignore me.

BigPic

Thanks, I have read that one :D I have resisted the urge to send him a message about this fish. . . he probably gets way too many silly requests like that, however, I have sent a message to Felipe Canterra (he helped us collect them). I wonder if the orange ring around the tail spot means anything, all pics of Scotti that I have seen are white rings - another of the reasons I have questioned their true identity.

P.S. the new avatar seems more fitting than the bears  (my 4yo daughter saw it and loved it)

Here's a pic of 'gaucho' we had bout 2 yrs. ago. - really different looking (maybe ours wasn't a gaucho) notice the orange ring on tail-spot.

Scotti group sounds interesting, Felipe has said celidochilus should be in their own group also

I was thinking scotti as well due to the pattern on the flanks. All the gaucho pics I've seen look like the one MTN Pike posted. Go ahead and email Vinny Kutty, he answered a couple of emails I sent last year. Of course that maybe becuase I dropped Jer's name ...

I will stick with Scotti, just a curiosity, plus, having caught them, it would be cool to say that I managed to catch something out of the ordinary, mind you, I have never heard of anyone keeping Scotti anyhow :D

Peanut_Power

Cren. scotti is definitely one of those pikes that doesn't get the credit it deserves. Hopefully with your amazing skill at taking pictures they will get a little more appreciation?

darth ~ Hahahahahahahaha!!! I think Vinny is a little scared I might start flooding him with questions again so he answers any ones questions if you mention my name so I don't come at him.

Hey, thanks a lot for the compliment, I am working at it, but, am far from where I know I can be - hardware holding me back now :D

With the gold flecks on on the flank, the orange ring on the tail spot and the RED eyes on most of them, they should be WAAAAY more popular, they are like dogs, begging at the top of the tank when I come near, and, they were the first of the wilds that I brought back in march to take food, straight to pellets!

Ray - we have a really nice 8" scotti we're growing out, I'll have to post some photos of him. Thing is, ours doesn't have quite the same coloration as yours, maybe a regional variant. Am pretty sure ours is also from Uruguay, by way of Ken Davis.

Thx. for your excellent photography! Are you going on the AqvaTerra trip with Ken this December? It should be a good one, maybe some celidos plus new undescribed pikes from a new area never tried before. Wish I was going.....

I wish I was going back so soon! I will make my way back to Uruguay, my wife would kill me if I tried to use more holidays on "fish stuff" this year

As for the coloration, that is what makes me question the ID on my fish. . . Let's see those pics

Well...I said it for 3 months ago...and I say it again; C.scottii!!
Only the females show a dorsal spot....and only when they are breeding.
For those who wanna know where the diff. species bellongs to (I mean the diff. groups) ;

There's a lot of fish being sold in the hobby as gaucho, which are not. Ray I know you collected them with Felipe so go with his ID, he knows more about Uruguay fish than anyone else. This is the only fish we caught that we thought was gaucho (Felipe id), a female from Ansina.

That guy must be from Ken, looks exactly like mine do, he even looks to be about the same size, between 4-5"? I just remember there were two very different looking groups of "Scottii", a very grey one and this more yellow one with the flecks of gold in the body. . . I only took the golden ones, they looked fantastic even stressed!

I have learned a whole bunch from Chaitika on the photography end, If you read his posts, he gives a lot of tips, things that are good even with p/s cameras. Thanks for the kinds words, still lots to learn and get better at! :D

I just have to say, thanks to you Ray, Crenicichla are finally getting captured to their fully beauty in pictures. Your pictures are helping them get the attention and appreciation that they deserve!!!

John ~ Wow!! Looks awesome man!!! Wish you could make it to the MCA this year in KC. Gonna be some cool fish and people there for sure!

BigPic
08-31-2009, 9:04 AM
Thanks for the compliment - I may blush. . . LOL

I still have a ways to go, I don't think you can ever fully capture the beauty of a lot of the pikes that are out there. . .

Snap some shots at the MCA - I was there last year in Des Moines!

Peanut_Power
08-31-2009, 2:15 PM
See, you always pick the ones to go to when I'm not there! LoL!!! We need to have a Crenicichlaholic get together and go to some convention with each other. Might suck a bit though cuz we would all bid against each other. LOL!

I will definitely take pictures at the MCA. Not sure if I will be there from the 18th - 20th though. I know 20th is the auction, and thats the main thing I want to make it for. :)

I should go up early on Saturday for the fishie shows and what not.

Definitely! I was actually born in Malawi, Africa. Long story, hahaha. I came to Canada once, and they almost didn't let me back into the states cuz I told them that.

Yesh, it would be totally awesome. If we do do that, I'll have to get us some cool gear or something.
