don't buy a sliver :) . I followed all the rules for preventing it but it still got it. A black or jardini have a far less chance of getting it but it does still occure with them to.. good luck

Or get a WILD CAUGHT SILVER. Its the limited gene pool of captive bred silver aros
that are a major factor for drop eyes IMO.

Ping Pong balls are thought to be a preventative for d.e . Who knows if it actually works or not. Enclosed tanks are known to work though.

Eyedroop is not caused by the fish's reflection at the bottom of the aquarium nor by bacteria attacks but by the type of food fed to the fish, from what i read in a book, 2 asian hobbyist conducted experiments on feeding tough anchunky foods to their aro and after a few days with this kind of food, the eyes drooped, so it is recommended to feed your aro small and tender kind of foods. I hope this helps.

Prevention of Drop-eye.
Don't overfeed, keep the fish in heathy shape...not a fat fish, and put a couple of ping pong balls in the tank for him to look up at all the time when he swims..... I did this and it helped my RTG Arowana drop-eye improve by 95%. It is still not perfect like the other eye but it is find to me at just a slight drop.

put a goldfish inside one of those little containers that you get in the quater machines.
fill it with a little water and a gold fish, make sure it floats.
it use to do it with my oscars. they would chase it for hours.
gives them a good work out

stick with thier natural foods like insects, on the surface or small birds. wild caught insects are probably best = less fatty.

Wild caught or breed it wont make a difference in the fish getting drop eye. I have seen hundreds of wild caught silvers and 95% of the time they develope drop eye once placed in a tank, even the big ones.
It is an enviromental problem and stoping it from occuring can difficult.

intresting lots of preventive measures, but maybe genes plays a part too

I'm a little baffled by the ping pong ball..how do you keep the aro from eating it? LOL...i mean i know they probably could! And they seem to like to eat everything...i know my 7/8" one eats just about everything i put in the tank, even go and steal it from the cichlids...so i would be a little worried about droppin one in....

well... if there is a lot of reason due to droop eyes...
1: their diet... fat food that provide extra fats around the eyes.
2: too hungry... aro tend to look down more for food.
3: height of ur tank... depend if u having two or more tier tanks
4. illness... poor water condition
5. movement... there is too much movement in their surrounding.

anyway the above is just my own conclusion..

agree... but can do some major operation to get the fats out...

The main cause is enviromental. Think of it this way wild silvers do not develope it in the wild, but when introduced into an aquarium 95% of the time they develope drop eye, this is an enviromental problem combined with diet. Just b/c silvers are more likely to develope this disorder dose not automaticaly mean it is genetics.

ping pond ball on the surface

May be also put a blinking light ( bicycle light ) together with the ping pong ball.

If your aro is on the lower tier of the fish stand (near to the floor), your aro has low chance of getting droopy eye

I tried the ball floating in the tank. It simply did not exist to my aro. He paid zero attention to it. I think it drew more attention from my daughter, how was trying to figure out why one of her toys was in the tank.

I have been told to remove the ping-pong ball once the arow is big enough to eat it because there have been reports of aros lodging ping-pong balls inside their mouths. (Some arows may be dumber than others.)

My aro, still small, did try to eat the ping pong ball the first time I placed it in the tank, but it has given up on it and does not seem to notice it much.

i wont risk putting a ping pong ball in my tank, my arow will think its a giant pellet made just for him.
