I am considering finally getting a RTC seeing that I have the capability of keeping one. Before a make any decision though is this time of the year the best to buy them? I found a 5'' for $35. Is this a good deal? What is a good price?
I'll keep filling you guys in as the project progresses.

If its in good shape, grab it, 35.00 is good for a 5 inch. Also being summer time you can find worms ,catch small sun fish fillet them and see if it likes them.

flyin lizard: your signture says you live in NY, I am guessing your pond with the RTC is indoors?

Are 5'' RTCs skittish like the 2'' juvies? I am prepared to leave the light off all day and night to make him comfortable.
if you spend time cleaning the tank, feeding it, watching it, it will get used to you.

ras,,, you guessed it 90 miles north of the city.. and yes the pond is indoors. How my pond is setup the light is an overhead spot type using one of the funky energy eff. bulbs a 40 watt size and I have it at one end of the pond ,during the day the rtc will swim around but usually at rest it is at the darker side of the pond, until I drop a nightcrawler in then the mouth with a nose attached to a stomach goes to work..

It turns out that I in fact can't measure visually. I bought the little guy. He is 3 inches long and has a faint red tail. I'll put up pics later on when I figure out how. Thanks for the help guys.

Are the claims that powerfeeding an RTC makes it grow faster true?
