I just recently bought a 6-7 inch Midas cichlid, and I am having a tough time with this guy..........couple of questions..
How should I setup the tank around this big guy?
Why is he so shy?
when will he grow fat and Bulky?
best food?

How recent is recent. Like today or couple weeks cause he still might be just getting used to everything. I feed mine a mix of different foods. blood worms, and a bunch of different types of hikari foods

What no pictures of the midas?! I kept mine tank pretty open, he enjoyed the swimming space. I had a few pots for the pleco to take shelter from him. Do you have any tankmates with him? Is he not the dominant fish? Wait till he settles in and kills everything else. :D Mine started to put on weight when he hit the 11" mark. I used to feed mine a variety of hikari gold, bio-gold+, sinking carnivore, massivore, cucumber, and spirulina pellets.

I just got him about two days ago......I only have plants and large rick rocks with him, he is already trying to eat the plants........here is a pic, do you think male or female?

I need to see a vent shot to determine the sex. But, it looks like a red devil to me. Give him some time he will come around soon and he'll be a banging the glass. :D

Unless it comes from a reputable source. Nostlikely it is a hybrid of some sort. Looks to me to have a Midas body with Red devil snout. Nice fish anyway though. He will come around, just give him time. I think in the one that his vent is showing and it is a male. As far as the fat and bulky part. LFS's don't ussually feed their fish to the best of their ability in order to save money. When he starts getting comfortable and eating feed him as much as he will eat a day. his growth will increase and he will chunk up. Anyway, GL. Nice fish;)

Im kinda looking to a community tank with this tank but i here that Midas/devils are great to keep........what do you guys think...should i just keep one big ol fish or do a community tank of smaller medium sized cichlids w/ catfishes and schooling fish????
