i have this Jd and i think he has like a deformidy because his tail isent like the other JDs i see at the pet shop and my brothers tank. if you look at the tail its weird idk it might be me but......... it just dosent look right to me but i still like him or her.

It's hard to say from that picture, it looks normal from what I can see. Looks like a pretty good Jack, his/her fins are cllamped in the picture does he/she have them clamped all the time?

yeah, it is kinda hard to tell from the pic but it does look like the tail area of the fish is a bit deformed. do you have any other pics of him?

On second look, the tail looks fine but the back end of the Jack looks odd, kind of squared off...

no it doesn't look like a hybrid, just a short body mutation. some of the more common cichlids like firemouths, convicts, jack dempseys etc. are so common that they are very rarely, if ever imported from the wild. that means all of these cichlids that are available in the hobby are from fish farms and breeders where they are very inbred. the more generations that are inbred, the more likely there is that deformities will show up. :)

this one looks like a hybrid, so the other one you have could be also if you got them at the same time and from the same place. if it is a short body, then yes that is a deformity imo. if the fish is healthy and acting/eating normally then there's nothing to worry about though. :)
