most cephalopods are short lived a couple of years tops! Venemous and can't be housed with anything.

yes they will and there is no antidote they only time they display the blue dots is when they are scared... you wont need a large tank for one they stay very small but never try and touch it it can kill you in minutes

My lfs had one too, it escaped a nano tank, but they found it on the floor. It will be at your own risk raising that octopus. i wouldnt even get near it.

i would love one but no deadly poisonous creatures in the house with the new baby on the way atleast thats my girls rule... well even if there wasnt a baby on the way that would be the rule she doesnt like things that can kill ya i had to get rid of my rattler for her and i almost ordered a gaboon viper but she said that she wouldnt live on the same block if i did

Just as a side note, every spp of octopus carry venom. Most are very mild. However, with the blue ring, you'd be dead about the same time you made a mistake.

im gonna start out bye cayching my own comman octo at the beach when i go.
My LFS gets them in by accident now and then, and he won't even sell them to people anymore. Some LFS's get them in, and don't even know they are dangerous. No joking, I actually saw one guy net a blue ring, and with his bare hands grab it and throw it into the bag. I almost freaked at him.
I would love to get one too, as they are beautiful cephalopods, but too poisonous, and WAY too short lived (6 months average for a blue ring - correct me if I am wrong?).
You may want to try your hand at a cuttlefish instead of an octopus. If you have the tank space, they are definitely cool pets to keep. Waiting for mine as we speak :)

I was gonna get one but octos in general are smart and great at escaping(they have no bones and can get out of the smallest holes) and i kept thinking "what if it gets out at night then i get up to piss and step on it?" shortly after i decided agenst.

There was a show on the Discovery channel about the blue ring octo. it was VERY cool.. I think it is the ultimate monster to have.. but a little to dangerous for me according to the discovery channel they say that the poison in this octo is 10,000 times more potent than cyanide!

SO GORGEOUS! But I would be very careful! $60 sounds really cheap to me.

$60 sounds expensive to me. I used to see them for $30 CAN! Exotic, yes. Cool, yes. Unfortunately, extremely short lived. One of the more short lived of the cephalopods. When you buy one, it may already be near the end of it's life cycle, and may last less than a month in your tank. $60 for a month seems a bit pricey when you think of it that way.
Price varies widely, that is not bad, but as pointed out, they only live 12 to 18 months and one with a 6-8" tentacle spread is already an adult, it is an interesting toxin that is fairly easy to preserve though so if that kind of thing interests you and you are very careful it might be worthwhile.

Are cephalopods so short lived in the wild? I know the giant octopus can get old but do the small ones have such short lives? If not, it seems cruel to try and keep an intelligent animal knowing that it will inevitably die. If not, go for it, I guess.

I agree with the knowing it's gonna die thought. If this is the case, I would certainly not support the market by purchasing one. If you do get it, I hope it does well and you live to tell about it, or at least till you can post pics!
All animals (and people die) they, like some killies just have very short life spans, even the Pacific giant octopus only lives 3-5 years. The only exception I can think of is the chambered nautilis that can live for 20.

Apperently I have been told that they are amazing escape artests and can squeeze through a crack the WIDTH of a dime. I would hate to stumble across that and have it kill me just when I came to say hello!

True that Blue rings are NOT for Newbs... I had one for 1.5 yrs... great, f'in smart pet!! However they can kill you, and only show off t\their cool colors when threatened, pissed, or ready to strike. I usually had to provoke it to color up for me. Stick with common octo's... you'll have the best luck with those to start off.

Because some experts claim they are at least as smart as cats. I wouldn't keep an animal that intelligent in a cage or tank, regardless of how long they live. That's just me though. Anyway, if they can live longer in the wild and can't be captive bred, how is it not cruel to keep them?

a 30 g would probly be good for a blue ring but excellent water quailty is a must and make sure that there is no way to for it to get out if u can get a pencil thru a hole then it could fit
