I keep crickets in a bowl for convenient feedings for my Oscar and tree frog. But they chirp. If I keep them cold enough or alter their air in some way, will they stop chirping? I know it would be effective, but I don't want to rip off their legs. That's just plain torture. Is there anything else I can do to shut them up?

The males do this to get the women. I didn't notice the sound when I used to breed crix. Can you put them in a closet, basement.

Actually, it is my wife. I've noticed she chirps faster when it's warmer in the house. I'll put her in the basement. Thanks.

.
crickets don't use their legs to chirp, grasshoppers do. So tearing off legs won't help ;)
