hey guy's im new so hi to all i just bought two canister filters i have always used hob how often to i clean out the filters or rinse them out just looking for general rule of thumb thanks

I use the flow as a reference. When the flow starts ot slow is time to clean the sponges. About every 2 months for me.

thanks i will play it by ear and see my tank is 180g 2 oscar's 1 is 7-8" other is a new guy so hes about 3" three yellow cichlids all 3" a jd about 3" 2 plecos 5" or so. I have two canister filters rated at 400gallons hr and a penguin 350 hob all running now

kinda depends on what kind of canister you have also. Some clog faster than others. I have a eheim 2180 and it only needs cleaned about every 5-6 months. My filstar xp3 needs cleaning about every 3 months. I dont see how anyone could get one dirty enough to clean once a month

I have 2 xp3's and the flow really starts to suffer if I dont clean them at least once a month, its mostly the MicroFiltration+ pads that get really clogged up for me.

every one or two months.

Ah I see, yes those would clog fast. I tend to only usea sponge in the bottom and the rest filled with substrate pro. I quit using the micro pads because they are a pain. filter floss also clogs fast

Yeah, I probably should ditch them, but its worked well for me so far and my water is very clear and clean.
