I just bought a Magnum 330 and set it up to the best of my ablity(no instructions were included). I have never owned or have seen a canister work. The filter is very noisy. The tank that the filter is set up in, is located in my bedroom. There is no way i will be able to sleep with this filter. Are canister filters loud or did I just not set it up right?

I don't think anyone would tolerate a noisy filter.

you could have air trapped inside.
when setting up my canister filters and after maintenance mine are sometimes noisy but once the air is flushed out they are quiet again

All of my whispers are silent. I hope my canister will be the same because the tank's going to be in my room.

that's not normal, all of my eheims are dead silent. check the impeler shaft, somtimes they can become bent, and this will make the filter very loud.:WHOA:

that's what i thought too, i have the C, 40, and 10i, have friends using other whisper models which were all silent, that is until you go to the 60, loud POS, and it's both of my 60s that i got in one order, not one single filter but two

All three of my 404s are silent, and my eheim is silent, other than the water falling into the tank. Whisper 60s are fairly quiet in my experience, and have 3 of them. However, the Tetratec is much quieter, and filters much better than the whisper line.

Sounds like trapped air. tilt it and shake it to get that air out.
If that doesnt work, clean out the impeller and shaft, as there might be dirt or sand causing the noise.

It isnt a gurgling noise that is coming from the filter. It is the actual motor that is making the noise I think. When you fill a canister filter up with water to get it started how much water should you put in? I filled it about 3/4 full. Also has anyone had expierence with the Magnum 330 that could tell me if they are all this loud. It sounds like a fan set on the highest setting. I cant even hear the TV in my room!

A rattling noise means a bad bearing, a sound like gravel in a tumbler is bubbles.

my magnum 350 is more silent than any of my powerfilters. only time it makes noises is when it first primes itself after being turned off, or when some debris makes into the impellar area...

try checking the shaft, my eheim had similar problem until i replace the ceramic shaft which comes with rubber joints and a new cover.
