Captive breed ornate max out around 16"-18". Rarely go to 20". Some bad gene makes them stop at 12-14 inches. I used to have a male ornate and only grew to 13.5" and I've kept it for 5 years and it stop growing there. It wasn't just an ornate but my lap and endli as well only max out to 14-15". That was the time I started experimenting on foods and bought more bichirs. Found out that some captive breed that have good genes even if they are sibling will grow bigger and some with bad genes won't get as big. It's usually bichirs with unique appearance that's not look very close to a wild type stay smaller.
mine has normal pattern iv had her for 2 years(i think) i grew her out from 4"

Toyin don't get captive breed bichirs but he got a polypterus sp. "dabola" that I think is a "wild" hybrid. I'm just not to sure as I'm still trying to get that one and compare it with my Guinea lap x endli hybrid.
hmm i see any updates on your bichirs?

He posted that on an old ornate forum a few months back I think, when someone asked what tank to get for an ornate. He said it was 7years old. But who knows how big of a tank..I'm sure it was monster!

They are a long lived fish, Hao if yours is only 3 years old I'd say its got some growing still to do. I've heard of bichirs that are far older than you are... ;)

wished I had asked if my guy was from wild caught or captive breed, I just liked his coloring so much I was sold at that, guess I'll see where he maxes out.
