Can plecos thrive and do well with salt in the tank? And what temp can they survive in? I have an albino sailfin, trinidad, leopard sailfin, royal, and vittata. I want to transfer them to a 55g with my datnoids.

everyone says plecos don't like salt.

prove it.

I've kept plenty of plecos with a good amount of aquarium salt with no problems.

:)

Do you think my plecos will do well in these conditions? About 2tsp of salt per gallon in a 55g and the temp around 85.

well, plecos arent really found in brackish or salty water. however like ming said it is possible to do, and probably in the same way that you can keep fig. of 8 puffers in freshwater. i personally wouldnt do it, but i think the sailfin (l083) will be alright for sure, and the trinidad will prob be to (Glyptoperichthys punctatus?) aswell as the peckotilia sp. im not sure about the royal, they can be pretty fussy. i wouldnt put any pleco in brackish water though just because they come from soft blackwaters, the opposite of brackish. ive seen plecos kept in brackish water and they swell up really big and develop huge boils as they can not pass excess water because their osmosis regulatory organs can not function. you can try it but im not sure on your outcome

aquarium salt doesn't make the water "marine" or "brackish". only marine salt does.

your pleco will be just fine. ;)

i thought he meant marine salt. is the reason you use aquarium salt just to help stop diseases etc?

Mine have salt in there water, mostly as a preventative, but I have never tried it that high. I would agree with davo that the royal would be a bad choice for that. the trinidad and sailfin will be fine, as will the rest I suspect. I would hold off on the royal see how your other plecs do under that much salt, and then you can try it.

namely, parasites.

namely, parasites.
o right i heard of many people doing this, with and without plecos. do you have it in all your tanks?

I don't really use salt unless I see something's wrong or when ammonia is high.

I keep both together no salt...ever .
Do the Dats Need salt? never seen it mentioned.
I'd knock the temp down to 82
I keep 3 Loo1 Glyptoperichthys joselimaianus and 2 Datnoides Pulcher together for a year now both are thriving:)

I have a pleco in my tank with goldfish and saltwater fish. I have pics to prove it. Pleco does't seem to mind the salt.

i think that there is at least one dat that needs salt, but its not my area really

Do you think they can handle the heat? I'm using aquarium salt to prevent disease and promote health with my dats.

That is pretty high temp for plecs, I tend to stay around 75-82 with mine.

sorry i was under the impression you meant marine salt, it should be fine (still not sure on the royal though). a lot of the plecs you have there (all i think) prefer slightly less heat, but then they'll prob be fine with it as long as its constant and theyve been acclimatised to it. maybe start raising the temp slowly in the tank they are in until the tank temperature meets the other one. i like wyldfya also keep my tanks slightly lower about 27 degrees C.

29 degrees C is on the high side of what many plecos are accustomed too, but they should be fine

not really.

there are two species that are known to occurr in brackish water, but both can live just as well in freshwater.

however, I've found that the silver datnoid are more prone to infections in freshwater.

The dats I will be adding with my plecos are 2 thin bars and 1 Indo. They seem to do really well with some salt in the water and heat. This is why I wanted to know. The only dats that are brackish conditions are the silver dats and the NGTs are slightly brackish I think. Thanks for the info guys. So I guess the royal is the only one?

yea, but it may be ok. i duno how much aquarium salt would become concentrated in algae or bogwood, and when how concentrated it is before it would harm the fish. i know you cant really use meds with royals, and a lot of unexplained deaths are due to not having bogwood

Doesn't make them unexplained then does it?

lol, alright. you know what i meant. it was a mystery to them. until i told em thats what they need lol. they are very prone to parasitic infections aswell in comparison to all other plecs

YEAH I KNOW! THATS HOW I LOST MY LAST ONE! Stupid parasites.

davo

My first was a beautiful L190, but he died one day of a parasite. So I was very sad, and my wife bought me the L330 Royal! That made me very happy!
