She looks GREAT! I have never kept Noto's, they are on my want list and it's getting shorter all the time! Hopefully you will manage a couple of the other one. . . is is a male?

unfortunately the other is a female as well. i picked up three and they were in pretty sorry shape. had a fungus of some sorts, two recovered and one didnt.
i got them so small that the ocelli on the dorsal fin wasnt showing yet, i should go get some more but last time i was at shark aquarium, the tank with them was looking pretty bad. i still love them and so far not to much aggresion

I was wondering what a good price for them is. My lfs is selling two for $145 and I was thinking about getting them. Ive had one before in a 125g with Oscars and JDs but that was a long time ago and the price seems a bit high. They are both about 5". Also, how big do they get because I dont remember mine being that big.

5" seems kinda of big. Ive always heard 3-4" on these guys. Ive had two females for about 8 months now and they seem to have stopped growing at around 3". are they definitely notopthalmus?
$145 seems to be alot of money in my mind. I paid $45 for 3. They were only 1.5-2" tho.

Eh maybe they arent. Ill have to go back and see what they are exactly. I thought the ones at the lfs were a little too big.

I think that you should hunt down at least one male, be one of the first to spawn them, I think they need really low pH and hardness to make it work :) One guy here in Winnipeg has been trying in vain to get them to spawn with no luck, I'm not sure he even still has the pair.

Wow, they are looking top notch mate!!! Loving the coloration? What size tank you got them in?
Keep it up, they look like they are starting to get the pink belly already! :D AWESOME! Its cool as they age and get more sexually mature, their whole dorsal will go pink, along with their belly! Looks amazing!
When they face off, do you notice that the black blotch behind their eye and the yellow on the gill plate intensifies? Its looks ridiculously awesome!! I wish I could get a picture of mine when they spare. Awesome about the aggression btw, I've got mine in the 300gal and they still spar with each other every now and then.
I've got two males btw, and only need one. Tip top shape as well. When one of them pairs up with my female, we'll see what can be done about getting you a male. ;)
BTW...do either of your females have more than one splotch in the dorsal? Mine has two, looks quite interesting. Very cool lookin for sure.
bdevilcasey ~ I'm gonna have to say either you are getting ripped off, or that is a different type of pike. Probably one of the larger Lugubris group like marms, lents, or atabapo. I can see a price like that for one of them. Still a little steep in my opinion, but if you take into account shipping costs, it about evens out.

your making me want to get the male and give it a try. i havent really had the interest in spawning yet and especially since the last place i lived i couldnt get my ph below 7. altho my new place is considerably more friendly with the water. i might need bigger than 20g id assume.

i have them in a planted 20g long. i was planning on getting some full tank shots later so ill post them when i take them. maybe ill try to get my other female. mine dont really spar much. the bigger one chases my apistogramma cacatoides and geo daemon and the other noto but they never really do the gill flaring... just the quick dash and chase. altho the dominant female will flare the dorsal fin, that when i got the good pictures showing the ocelli
about the splotches on the dorsal. do u mean like another ocelli? my smaller female is showing alot of red splotches on its dorsal, looks very cool. ill get a pic while i feed tonight

Yesh, my female has two ocelli in her dorsal. I guess they can have a varied number. My last female only had one though. I almost like the two better. LoL

Yeah, if the ring around the dorsal is red then it's either a noto or a cf noto or an orinico dwarf ... if it was orange, it would be those colombian 'wallacii' ...

Looks like you might actually have Cren. wallacii!!! Like darth said, they will have more of an orange ring around the dorsal ocelli.
Awesome tank too btw!! Is that a 20 long?

The tank looks great! The guy here in Winnipeg that was attempting to spawn them was using a 10g, I think. . . he had the ph down around 4.5, using RO and acid to get there on top of leaves LOL I should track him down and see how he made out in the end.

the rings around the ocelli are red. the pictures seem to make them turn kinda orangish.
thanks for all the compliments also. its good to know my first real attempt at a planted tank turned out alright.
big pic - definitely willing to here about the guy in winnipeg - i might be heading to shark aquarium this weekend so i might be able to try to pick up a male and put him in my spare 10 gallon til hes cured and can go in with the ladies

If it were me, I would grab a few males, my experience with creni's shows that the females are as mean if not more than males, especially when the female is established first! Can't wait to hear about a spawn :D LOL

:iagree:
BTW....my 'friend' here in KC has bred his already several times. :) I suppose I should just ask him how he did it. Hahaha. He was offering to sell me some of the babies a couple of months ago. He got his from the same source I got mine. :)

checked out the males yesterday and it would appear that they are not notos. the males are not displaying the extended front rays on the dorsal fin.
going to get some males tomorrow tho. hopefully i can get a pair.

ok so im taking suggestions on whats the best way to achieve success. i have two tanks at my disposal. a 40g and a 20g long, and a 10g which id rather not setup but might have to. stock lists are as follows:
40g: apisto bitaeniata, firemouth, 3 sd's, gold gourami, pleco
20g long: apisto cacatouides, 2 female notos, flying fox, pigmy cory, satanopercna daemon, clown loach
the question is how to arrange the fish to make everything work. i also have two tank dividers. heres my thought process. plus the apisto cacatouides is getting roughed up in the 20 already.
add tank divider to 40g. move over satanopercna daemon and apisto cacatouides, try to beef up the daemon so he can hold his own against the firemouth.
then add the 2 male notos into the 20g with the females and the other dither fish. then hope for the best and monitor the pikes behavior. does that sound like a good idea? is the 20g long large enough for all 4? or should i try them seperately in pairs

ummm well i keep my creni compress with 1 curvicep (used to be 3 but we had a power outage) and he was fine and didnt beat them up so maybe keep the apistos with them and then add tons of hiding spots

That is a tough one, I have heard of lots of guys keeping dwarf Creni's in 20's, not sure if two pair would work. . .

yea i think it will be alittle crowded. i divided the 40 gallon up. i have both males in there with the gourami and roseline barb. i need to beef them up alittle before i put them in with the females. they're very thin so i wanna put some meat on them.
i think by the end of the week im going to start putting them together and see what happens. ill try to get some pics of the males later also.

A lot of breeding pairs of dwarf pikes are kept in 20 longs, but with the exception of Cr. regani, they are paired up in larger tanks first.
