I also think it's some species of Channa (snakehead-illegal in the US by the way), but I know very little about them and couldn't tell you what species

Not being a snakehead fanatic, but I do believe that species is Channa gachua...
That is a Channa sp.assam, also called lal cheng.
Often sold as blue bleheri.
Its a subttropical mouthbrooding channa from northern india

HAHA! all close, but wrong. (kinda)
The pictured fish is mine!
It is one of my Channa sp.redfin.
Not too much info on it yet, but has a slight stewartii look to it in person.
Here are some more pics of them:

Its ordinary Ch.gachua.
Similar but not gachua.
The Indian gachuas that are similar have a red line under the eye, these have a kind of flash/smear.
Also, the gachua lack the black spotting on the face and the length of the body.

ya definitely channa gachua.

ya definitely channa gachua.
Only in fin color.
Body color is completely different, black spots along the head and body.
The pectoral fins are also the wrong color.
There is no Red on the outer edge of the anal fin too.
I also believe the dorsal fin ray count is smaller on the Gachua.
I keep mine in a tank with Jet black gravel, and black backing sheet. This makes all the fish in it have darker looking skin.
In a nuetral gravel/backing tank the body is a very pale sky blue/grey.
The problem with people labeling SH is often a new species is found, not sure where to put it? Boom, Channa Gachua.
There is s few members here with Redfins, one of whom has sent a clipping off for anaylisis. Will be great to get the results back!
Please compare all I have said above with this photo and your Gachua picture:

They actually look more like the Gachua posted earlier.
Yours seem to have no spotting and the body/head shape is different.

Gorgeous Krabi there.
They are similar when it comes to fin colors.
The face and head shape is different as is the black speckles.
It also lacks the Gachuas thick stocky body.
In person I would most definatly say my RFs look very similar to the stewartiis I used to own.
This photo is what I believe to be my male:

hi
just a couple of pics of one of my spec redfins as its matured, looks nothing like a gachua now,dr ralph britz seems to think it of the stewarti complex and has a fin clipping of mine so when he has the time he will id it and i will post the results.if it is a stewarti it will be the first to be found outside of india so its a big thing in the channa world.
hi
and would just like to say that tokyogasmask,is right when he says its not a gachua,i also keep many different gachuas and have a group of krabi, the redfins do look simalar to a cachua when young but change as they grow.

How long do you plan on keeping it with the Auranti?
Untill I see any signs off aggression of which there isn't yet and hasnt been for the few weeks it has been in with it.
It was put in with the Auranti when I had to seperate it from the other redfin it was with. The pictured one was the aggressor.

I see, if the sp.redfins growth rate is anything like the sp.fire and ice growth rate it won't be long before it becomes dangerous for the redfin. Is that auranti around 7 inches?Auranti's are not vicious piscivores but the redfin may not survive the first sign of aggression from an Aurantimaculata. Plan on getting any more redfins to disperse the aggression?

BTW, for those with mature sp. redfins, how many inches would you say this species maxes out at?

There is no aggression between the two, and if there is the redfin goes elsewhere.
My The pictured Auranti as around 9-10" the redfin is around 6".
And no, won't get anymore. If I decide this chappy has been a good fishy, I may let him back into the tank with the other redfins.

Tokyo its no good, i had to comment on this, you know it yourself, it would be bad enough if they were both the same size. The size differences are far too big.
The first to die will be the redfin.
I wasnt sure to whether to make a comment on this but i wouldnt like to see your fish get killed. You know yourself you must never mix channa, and apparently there is NO bending the rules. Especially with Aurantimaculata, one of the most aggressive channa, that will not tolerate other channa.
It was bad enough what i was doing with babies and likewise, there was no aggrression between Pulchra and Assam, but I wasn't prepared to take the chance off what the pros were saying and neither should you, you know how irresponsible it is.

Thanks for your concern, But my knowledge of channa and channa behavior is more than enough to ensure the well being of all my fish.
That said one major problem with keeping channa (especially in the hoipe of breeding) is that sometimes fish need to be seperated. Now I'm not in an area of the world where I can simply pass down an unwanted fish to friends of even sell, So when a group of channa are pairing or when in-species aggression starts the choices I have are limited.
Do I simply leave the quarreling channa to fight to death? Or do I simply cull the problematic fish?
Or the other option is to put said channa in very large tank with an Auranti.
Well you see the choice I made.
While I appreciate your "concern" Danny, I feel that you might not be in the correct place to give me advice on keeping Channa.
Please don't take this as an insult or anything like, but mearly an observation.
Cheers, TG

Maybe give me that Auranti. lol

Would an alligator Gar be ok for my 450 lt tank if i dont have any snakeheads in it and could they mix with other fish and if so which fish?
If the alligator Gar is too big for my 450, could you recommend any others with the same look as the alligator?
By the way have you kept any wolf fish as i would like a tank with interesting fish in it, i also like Oscars.
Are there any bichirs that have character or are they all a bit mundane as i have read. You seem like a good person to ask these questions as you have a great variety of fish.
Also, i hope you dont think this sounds a bit cheeky but would there be any chance you could put together a mixture for my tank containing some of the fish i have mentioned.
Thanks, Danny

Hi danny.
Alligator gars get huge. No way in a 450l im affraid. ( I would love to have one myself if I had a spare garden pool!)
Spotted florida gar would be a good option to start with.
Wolf fish are awesome looking fish. I have never kept them, but it's a possibility for the future though. I believe they also get pretty big, though there are a few suitable for home aquaria.
I love Bichirs, they are my favorite fish of all time, so I am slightly bias when I say they all have charachter. Though admittedly they are pretty lazy fish haha!
As for a mix, there are plenty of possibilities, One of my biggest tank mixes is as follows: 1x 40cm Oscar, a handfull of 40-50cm gar, and a whole load of bichirs. In with a very large common plec. never had any problems with this mix.
As I said earlier, I also have a large tank with a number of Bichirs, Datanoids, oscars and a Sailfin Plec.

To each his own...the auranti may not consider it a threat, but if something does go down when you're not looking here's to hoping the redfin survives. Nice fish BTW...:naughty:

Hi tg,
thank you very much for the info. i quite fancy a bichir, i had 1 that you identified, it was an ornate, i got it by accident, it was supposed to be an ornatipinis channa so i took it back.
Is there one type that is slightly more active than most, which would you recomend, i noticed you had a very nicely coloured 1 in bottom pic.
what do you think of the fire eel, i heard they are very friendly and come up to the glass, i know oscars do this, are there any bichers that share this characteristic.
That oscar you have is the best ive seen to date its an absolute corker,
if you know a fish with as much character as an oscar please tell me as ive been looking for a long time.
thanks again, Danny.

I find my "Deli" (Polypterus delhezi) to be pretty active. Infact it's the most active of all my Bichirs.
I remember your ornate. They are great fish, I have a couple. Their colors and markings can look fantastic.
As for more character than an 0scar, is it possible!!
I love my oscar and yup they have amazing personalities.

and do you think the Ornate will be too big for my tank?
By the way what do you think of the Nile Bichir?
