How big is the pond, Herons are a real problem because once they find a food source they keep coming back and can feed to about 30-36" deep. If the pond is small enough us bamboo poles and garden shade netting to create a raised pavilion over it, They can be attractive and have the added benifit of reducing temperature swings and slowing algae growth.Very few herons will go under canopies like that.

i live right on the bank of a river and herons are a real problem in my ponds. there are some motion activated sprinklers, one brand scare crow is pretty good.or you could put a net over it,or make a maze o fishing line that works too.good luck.

I have used Canopy frames like this one, they come in several widths, up to 22' and you can make them as long as you want. make the roof from garden shade cloth and the side either of the same or mosquito netting, put the side on curtain rods so that they can be bundled and tied back for display or access, it actualy looks prtty nice and if you make it 10' longer than the pond you have a bugscreened picnic area as well.

I think it is illegal to kill herons every where, but all the herons that come to my uncles pond only come once and never come back, if you know what I mean.:naughty: But like guppy said, one they find your pond they keep coming back. So you should do something fairly quick cause the can clean out your pond pretty fast.

Home Depot has netting for use on fruit trees that you can suspend over your pond and it's not that noticeable. Just keep it a foot or so above the pond and make it so they can't get under it at the sides. If you stake the sides you can use bamboo supports that they sell for growing plants. I don't know if those plastic owls or snakes will work as a scarecrow or not.

Tie a grenade to each fish. The damn bird gets one meal. You didn't kill the bird, the fish did.

get a jack russel or fox terrier and teach it to chase the herons, they smart and it will keep em busy too.

Outta curiousity, why are they illegal to kill, not that I'd like to see one dead though one wiped out all the fish in my neighbors pond. I think my fish will be ok cause it has very good hiding places for them.

Some are endangered, with some it's an environmental thing...they scavnege some and keep the population of some fish in order, BUT they are opportunistic, proven by your neighbor:eek: and they were here first... some people even think we could be related, I don't see a resemblence...except to a third cousin on my uncles side, I think it's the eyes on each side of his head:ROFL: but a nice kid and HE stays out of peoples ponds !

i heard a terrible story of a woman who put netting all over her pond and a pair of Fox cubs got caught in it, one survived but the other died  .... also netting is dodgy for frogs and thing... but you cant raise to too high above the pond because the herron can the just walk under them... lol its a tough problem... one way is to put a big plastic heron, available from many places, and as herons are terratorial they stay away, this worked for my friend... Till Mating season... lol
I wanted to have a paintball war conveniatly placed when the heron was around, but my parents relaized what i was up to and stopepd me... my bro simpy says 'it's only illegal IF you get caught'... :naughty: lol, but we havnt seen a heron here yet:woot: ... touch wood... :screwy:
really the best deterent is a small, fast, loud god.. terriers are amazing... either that or some Piranhas would teach the heron a lesson, the next time he wades into the pond... FIGHT BACK!!! lol, but seriusoly the Herons will actually just stab all the fish, just to kill them :screwy: eve nif they dont eat them all :swear:

I would definately learn it with a paintball or 2(50)
I think the sound of the gun alone would scare it away.

What we use for canadian geese is a model rocket ignitor and an M-80 or other loud firework, just push ignitor button and bang. (Geese just crap everywhere except my yard now as they hate the noise)

or Tippmann 98 with Flatline, response trigger and color that drab bird up:swear:

I would shoot it.
Not b/c I hate the bird in fact I like them I have a T-shirt on right now with two of them on it, its b/c it will not stop coming back to eat your fish and eventual it might bring a mate who will also eat your fish.
There are alot of herings out there

I don't know why nobody suggested this but the best thing you can get is an owl decoy.. they will keep herons away(a 12 quage also works great)
