Sorry man - royal plecos are awesome but mine pooped waaaay more than my common pleco. They pretty much eat wood and crap sawdust. But luckily they grow very slowly, so your little 3" guy isn't going to be catching up to your old 15" pleco in the poop department any time soon.

Cool royals are awesome.:clap

Yeah if you got some driftwood in there, theres gonna be brown sawdust all over the place. Get a powerhead to keep the dust moving so your filters can take care of it. Check your filter floss more frequently since this stuff is fine and will clog your filters faster.
I put mine in a tank with no driftwood and give him algae wafers. Every once in awhile though I put a little piece in there for about a week at a time, to give him some roughage.

It is very important for royals to have a large supply of wood in their diet. Lack of wood is a leading cause of death in these plecos.

I just traded in an 18" monster common. My new L330 royal will put out about the same amount of poop in about 4 days, but is only 5".

I agree with having driftwood available for it's diet. Mine happily eats algae wafers and cucumbers. They sure grow slow though.

Where in hell did you find a royal pleco for $30???
WyldFya
05-17-2006, 3:44 AM
I have seen royals for as cheap as $20, but it all depends on the size you want. My 330 was 3" when I got him, and he was $55. He is now a healthy 5.5".
what type of royal is it? got any pics up yet? yea, again, bogwood is a must for it to survive

Why would you buy it if you are just going to moan about it crapping habits. all plecos crap alot. I have a tank that has 3 Royals, Green Phantom, Dragon Fin, And a 10" Common and I don't mind the crapping. I think it is a small price to pay for such lovely fish. And remember a crapping pleco is a happy pleco

Where in hell did you find a royal pleco for $30???
ONE OF MY LFS, located near ADAMS and CRENSHAW.
[LOS ANGELES, CALiFORNiA; COREA TOWN]
the store name is "TOkYO AQUARiUM"
they sell 3inch ROYAL PLECO for $30.
and the huge [7-8inches] one for about $50
i traded in my old HUGE regular pleco for $7 store credit.
which made my final cost $23.

yeh I will post pics of my new fish. The next couple of weeks will be upgrading to a 150 to a 180 hopefully. Tank shopping right now:woot: . The pleco for 50 will be here in July. We told the guy that when he comes down for fourth of july to bring it with him. And the other one should be a the petco tomorrow. Don't laugh at petco. We are friends with an employee that orders them special for us and does not over charge us. The fish business is about having contacts with people to get the fish you love.

I just came home from work to notice my royal died. :swear: I dont understand, This is the third. My first was 10" and died from ich. The second was 4" and died in my koi pond, and now my 5 1/2" died for some unknown reason. The water is clean, there is tons of drift wood. I feed em shrimp pellets and hikari algae disks. I guess they are very delicate plecos. I bought him for $30 at about 4". Had him for good 5 months. Always active and eating. I really love royals and other plecos with the same structure. I hope that I can get another and find out why mine died a mysterious death. Good luck with your guys plecos I love the pics! heres some pics of him.
