I know that this is nothing new. I know that most people do it. I know that every responsible person that keeps fish should. I never do but did this one time.
I just bought a bunch of characins from a reputable source. Shipped in and looked great out of the bag. Eating and swimming. I decided to put them in a spare 10 gallon because I wanted to make sure they were eating before putting them in to compete with the rest of the crew. A couple days later I noticed black spots all over their bodies and they're scratching themselves on any surface they can find.
I called a friend and ID'd them as helminths. Nice. Thank God I didn't put them in the big tank! They should be alright now that they're on something but I could have really screwed things up had I not isolated them.
