I won't even guess on the first two, cuase I'll say something silly like lucius or something ...

but as for the dwarves, yeah that female appears to be a regani female. OR it could be that sp. Xingu Dwarf actually ... they were split off from regani recently, and I know they tend to have very few (1-2) dorsal spots where most regani races have several ...

There isn't a drop of red on the females occeli:( Kinda disappointed, I should have gotten a better look at them before they went to the bidding table. I'm still going to try breeding them, just need to pic up a small RO system. Keep me in mind if anyone comes across one in the classifieds.;)

Nice pikes. I want some but dont have enough tanks.

Yeah, the white with zero red either means regani or sp. xingu dwarf. Either way, they should be good practice for breeding before tackling noto's ... I've haven't managed to crack noto's yet, but I don't have an RO unit ...

i know what the first ones are, i was surprised how small they were. how much did they go for? what about the other bag of them? you will have to give some updates jamie  im hoping my pike pulls through :(

Sorry Jamie....but the first ones aren't really what you think they are. :( If they do turn out to be those big Lugubris bruisers like they were sold as, I will be surprised.

Darth nailed it pretty much. Chances are they will turn out to be lucius. I'll get a good look at them this coming weekend though to help confirm. ;)

Yeah, those look like regani for sure. Bum deal on not being notos, but still awesome pikes for sure mate! :D

How many pikes did Scott put in the auction? Would be nice if I could get some deals on pikes! hahaha

Congrats on all the pike ups! :D

Here is a good shot of juv. lucius.

Lateral line from head to tail. Stripes ABOVE the lateral line. Humeral blotch behind pectoral, and NO spangles in tail, just a ringed ocelli.

Crenicichla lucius (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.drpez.org/albums/crenicichla-lucius/crenicichla-lucius-fotos.highlight.jpg&imgrefurl=http://atlas.drpez.org/Crenicichla&usg=__Fcj13sUq9DVUK-dFjz4kLSbl4ak=&h=95&w=150&sz=8&hl=en&start=5&um=1&tbnid=CVAuTGXD8MCzHM:&tbnh=61&tbnw=96&prev=/images%3Fq%3DCrenicichla%2Blucius%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3 Den%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1)

At sucha small size though, its possible they might turn out to be what you paid for. So don't loose hope just yet. Either way, they are superb pikes! :D

The first two had a much more prominent striped pattern when I looked at them on the table.

Or maybe I'm mixed up? They look a lot less like cincta now than I remember.

Do juvenile cincta have a similar pattern to the adults?

Peanut_Power
09-14-2009, 8:36 PM
Yup, the juv. and adult look pretty much the same. Plus they generally lack the humeral blotch, and have excessive spangles in the caudual, as well as the stripes go from belly to dorsal, instead of lateral line to dorsal.

Its still possible they could be cincta. Don't loose hope! :D

HiImSean

they seemed to have quite a bit of stripes at the auction. im pulling for ya jamie :D

LOL, thanks fellas! Guess I should have not been so nice trying to hurry and get out of peoples way. Next time I'll stand there holding the bag up for 10 minutes like most of the other folks did.

nice pick ups! I have to say, I got a group of 10 blue cincta a long time ago and at 3 inches. . . they looked nothing like any other pike I had seen! we need some pics of them settled. . . the glimmer of shine in the tail in the first pic makes me hope for you - that is what made me buy them when I did, they were GLOWING on the fins :D I have never seen a picture that did them justice, especially the tail!

titansfever83
09-14-2009, 10:59 PM
I'll try to get some soon. My camera is a P&S so I can't promise great pics.

They are starting to show a lot of red on the dorsal and tail fin now that they've settled in.

i think theres a shot that the first pics could be cincta. it has that look in its tail. i guess time will tell.

if i manage to breed my notos and ur still looking. i can always send some your way. time for me to get my RO unit as well. bank account is going to be hurting

Peanut_Power

Still 88% sure they are lucius. . .

Found some juv. pictures of cincta. . . they are close to the same size as the ones Jamie got.

Thanks Jer!

I'm still uncertain. I think my best bet is just to grow them out a little and try IDing them later. I will post a few vids later that I took with my P&S camera. There are vertical red bars/stripes on the tail and the top of the dorsal is also red. Really only visible to the naked eye, not sure if it will show up in the video.

i still say to small to say. pictures make them look the same size, if not smalller than the reganis, which are dwarfs. my guess is only 3 inches where as the pikes in peanuts pctures look more like 5-6".

just my guess tho. time will tell.

Red in the dorsal is normally a lucius trait. :ROFL:Sorry Jamie. We are battling over your fish, I hope we don't make you go crazy. Its been a fun debate though! I'll definitely get a look at them this weekend. ;)

Ok, lets make this a little more interesting then!!! Hahaha Would you like to make a bet? You get ALL my Crenicichla notophthalmus if they turn out to be Crenicichla cincta. . . I get one of your notos, doesn't matter which, if they turn out to be lucius.

can i make the bet and if i lose claim that i dont have any noto's. seems like my males don't have the extended rays on the dorsal fin, so not real notos. speaking of which, i need to get some pics up of the males.

I believe that counts as dirty dealing!

Go ahead and start another thread and post them up. My males dorsals don't extend horribly far, but they are seperated, and stand up about 1/4". Not sure how much longer they are supposed to be.

Perhaps we all have sp. 'orinoco'. Hahahaha

I was checking out the videos I took of them and to be honest they're crappy and not worth posting, too blurry.

I did spot a VERY faint iridescent spot near the end of the tail fin on one of them.

Jer, are you going to Scott's place this weekend? I talked to him and he was certain they were Cinctas, then he started to question himself. He said he had a couple left over and was thinking of growing them out a little to be make sure he was right.

Peanut_Power
09-17-2009, 10:57 AM
He is supposed to be coming to the EXPO this weekend, and I was assuming he was gonna bring them along. Was hoping to get a hands on look at them then. ;)

I'll be there Saturday, Saturday night, and Sunday. So probably won't hear back from me till Monday.

I might just get some myself, hahaha, be fun to find out what they are that way as well. We could have a grow out competition!

Alright sweet, hopefully he will bring some with him so you can get a look at them.

Whatever they are, they are very active and were eating some veggie/spirulina flake I put in the tank for other fish.

Jer, did you get a chance to check out Scott's fish?

I'm getting my sister-in-laws camera this weekend so maybe I can snap some better photos with it and post em up here. I got an order coming in Friday with a few RARE fish so I plan on taking pics of them too. :D

Yup, I had a chance to talk with Scott and Jim for quite a long time. Hung around their table more than anything. Great group of guys to talk to. :) They had some very nice fish there for sure. ;)

I didn't get any of the those juv. pikes in question. ;) I do still stand behind what I said though.

Thanks Sean.

They are going bye bye tomorrow. I've got bigger fish to fry. I'm holding on to the other pike until I can correctly ID them.

I'm disappointed that all the pike I got from the auction were mislabeled. :(Had they been slightly bigger at the time then I could have IDed them myself. The dwarf female just now started to show the yellow coloration

All is well, just sold the dwarf pair. The others really haven't changed any since I bought them. They still have the single Tail fin spot and some red coloration on the top of the dorsal fin. I'll post another update in a month or so, or when they begin to color up some more.
