View Full Version : New Fishroom - Garage or Bedroom????

Where should I put the new fishroom? I will have all 75 gallon tanks with double stands. If I use the bedroom I would have to keep my 180 gallon double stack setup in the living room. If I use the garage as a fishroom I could put the 180 double stack with all the 75s, which my wife would like. One drawback to the garage is that it has our lawnmowers and tools etc there as well. The bedroom is about 10'x12'. What do you think is the best option?

garage cause of cement fllors.Bedroom if it has cement floor.
You could always build a tool shed for the lawnmower and stuff.

I'm for keeping things in the house where they can be more easily enjoyed all year long. Plus, if you like the sounds, all the noise can help you sleep. Not to mention being able to drift off to sleep after hours of zoning in front of your tanks.

I vote garage as well. The Bedroom would get annoying with all the noise and let's face it...you bring someone "special" home and they see your room surrounded by fish tanks and stands, they're not going to think it's cool unless it looks like a public aquarium display, but they'll probably think you're a bit...strange.

I already get this with the double 180 stack in the living room. Then they go to my bedroom where I have an 8'x2' 240, a 75, 20, and a 10. Then they hit my sons room where he has a 75. Then they hit the garage area and see 2 55s and a couple of 30s. Don't get me wrong my house is about 2700 sq feet not including the garage, so it is a tad roomy, but I do look like white trash. Every time someone comes over they think I'm some kind of weirdo.

This is one of the main reasons that I like mine inside the house. I'm just worried now, because its getting pretty bad. They are going to call me the weird fish guy in the neighborhood.

Currently I have the below. I had 4 55 gallon tanks that I recently sold and one 40 gallon that sold.

8' 240g
2 180g
2 75g
2 55g
2 30g
2 10g

I would like to add the below list though.

Another 180 gallon and maybe two to four more 75 gallon tanks. These would be on a double stand.

I had another idea. I have an entire finished room above my garage. The only problem is that there isn't a water faucet up there. Another problem would be that I couldn't get huge tanks up there, but I could do a ton of 75 gallon or smaller tanks??? What do you think about this option.

Looks like most everyone is going with the garage. I could put a shed up, but my neighborhood has some strict covenants. I would have to pay about $6,000 to put a shed up, so I will have to live with the junk in the shed if I go that route.

Throw away all your yard stuff, hire a lawn service and convert garage into a kickin man/fish room. Kegorator big screen and tanks. My wife likes to think we are not white trash, just white clutter!

I would think that having them inside the house would be more enjoyable for sitting and watching fish. Does your garage have AC? Get rid of the yard stuff and move in some comfy chairs for fish watching!

I would say garage as well, but how well is it insulated? What about the summer time when its 90F-100F outside? Winter time when its 30F-50F?

Unless you can afford to run expensive chillers and have a few large fans it's going to be difficult. You also might need a few heaters in 1 tank just for the winter time.

Garage for shure. To many fish tanks in the bedroom make it more a fish room than a bed room..

The Garage doesn't have any AC/heat which was another concern.

you can find room heaters at a Lowes or Home Depot for less than 100 Bucks for the winter time. You can plug them directly into the wall rather than hard wiring them. For the summer when its blistering outside, depending on expenses and your wife's approval, a window AC unit would do the trick given that you arent opening and leaving your garage door open for 8 hours a day. You could cut a hole for a unit in your wall, or just build a contraption that allows the water from the unit to drain away and set it up on a table. Ive done this before and it worked just fine.

I'm leaning towards making the guest bedroom into a fishroom. Its only 10'6" x 11' though. I will probably keep the double stack 180s inthe living room. I will also keep the 240 in the bedroom. My other son didn't wan't to move his 75G to the fish room. So the fishroom wont be too overstocked. I setup a double stack 55 gallon setup in the guest room last night for temporary purposes. I may add a few 75 gals and bring all of my small tanks in there as well. Currently I have atlease one tank in everyone room in my house and 4 tanks in my master bedroom. I'm definately white clutter/ possibly even full blown white trash. If I move most of those tanks in my master bedroom to the fish room it would make the house look better. I do love all of my fish eye balling me when I wake up in the morning though. My Trimac just sits there looking at me, like quit pressing the snoooze button you lazy punk!

My home owners assocation wont let me have window AC units etc. Great ideas though.

just use your garage dont think of anywhere else just the garage because you can get a shed for everything and the weight of the tanks and everything in them wont effect the house' fountation. and besides the garage can be a cool place in fall and spring where you can just lift the door save some money on heat and light and show off your wonderful hobby. Enjoy it but dont let it take over your home. Now what i have done is in my families house that we will be moving to in the next month is that i have a grotto slash pool house with a cement fountaition and thats where all my world and hobbies will go next to my homemade pond

Your setup sounds like the ideal situation. Pool house kind of room would be awesome.

My garage is for tools, workbench, and for parking cars. if I put all my fish in there I'd ahve no place to work on stands, lighting, canopies, or any other projects.

I vote spare room with 1 display tank in the main living room. I did this with my den actually. display tank in the living room with my favorites fish and best looking decor/setup (and it's the silent one), den for all the other tanks in progress, ghetto style, or just not as good looking as the main display tank.

this means that anyone just comign in sees the one display tank and you can sho off your fish keeping skills with your most impressive specimens. then if they're the type who are wierd and don't like fish you can for go showing them the spare room.

but you must understand, they're the wierdos, not you.

This is kind of the way that I'm leaning. If I didn't have so much junk in the garage I would make that the fish room. I have tons of bikes and junk in general in the garage at the moment. The one true advantage of me using the garage is that I could put my 180 gallon double stand in there instead of the living room. But honestly it doesn't look too bad in there. I was going to sell the double rack, but didn't have any luck. Here is a picture of it.

I love that stand! Is the filter system combined? So the water flows from top to bottom, top tank to second tank to sump?

Deepsouth
09-17-2009, 6:25 PM
Filteration is combined. One sump runs both tanks. Tanks drain directly into the sump.

One more question, to support the upper tank is that a 2X6 across the front? Sorry about the derail, I have two 125's I was thinking about double stacking but I was worried about the upper tank spanning with out some kind of vertical support holding it up in the middle, of course this would block the view of the lower tank. I see you were successful and with larger tanks!

Thanks man.

2x4, but it does have plywood as well that provides indirect support. I know a guy that has 125 doubles that he built with 2x4s. Aquarium Maintenance specialist in Atlanta. He has pictures on cyphos.com

Beautiful Tanks! Have you thought about these "portable room air conditioners"? they just sit on the floor and have an exhaust vent that goes to the window, and since they don't stick out the window you could conceal it with some shutters or something. They're a bit more expensive than a window unit but still not too bad with all the money you have invested in the hobby already. Here's a link to some at Lowe's for you to get an idea of what I'm talking about. Best of luck!
