I'm thinking about using the fluval peat granules to lower my pH and soften up my water. I've tried driftwood and indian almond leaves without any success of pH changes.. So I think I'm gonna try this route but I have a few questions before I do..

1. How low does it change my pH to?

2. Is it safe to add into my filters if my tank is already established with a pH of 8.2. I'm afraid it will make a big change in pH and shock my fish if I add it.

3. Will it stress out my fish if I continue to do big water changes with my tap water that is a higher pH of 8.2? I normally do 40% water changes.

I am really just worried about the pH fluctuations when I do water changes..

Any opinions? I'm gonna clean out my fx5's today and I want to add it in so some quick help is needed!

Thanks in advance!

I use it constantly on 265. I have both fluval peat granules and peat floss usually sold for ponds. What size is your tank, also what are your water parameters particularly carbonate hardness and general hardness?

I find that the peat granules are more expensive and don't last as long, especially if you want the amazon black water effect.
