yea i think they can be found in alabama almost certain, from what ive read they can randomly appear in the strangest places such as rivers, ponds and lakes. They can supposedly live in mud for a while too when floodlands receed they just burrow in the mud. Anyways I have one and they are definitely cool fish to have, mine isnt aggressive at all it is very chill and just eats and kicks back. Very cool fish.

Actually they're very easy to keep. The hardest part is getting them up to the 3" size range. Once they get to this size the are easy. Fry are difficult to keep alive for some people. Last year I raised about 50 of them from <1" to 3" at which time I sold most of them, keeping one for myself. He is now around 10" and looks awesome. Very cool fish.
Saw some in central Alabama while on a collecting trip a couple of weeks ago but they were all large (>2' ) so probably not a good size for an aquarium unless it's a very large tank.

Being from Fultondale, Alabama I know there are some there! Unfortunatly I have never caught any. My buddy goes to Auburn and catches them all the time using a siene net in various swamps around there. Watch out for snakes though.

My buddy is on a cruise now. When he gets back I will ask him where he goes and I will let you know. Where exactly are you in Central Bama? My father is coming up to visit me ( I no longer live there ) and if you go swampin and have some extra gar or bowfin Itd be great if he could pic them up and bring them here!!
sachs aquaculture and jonahs both sell them...
