congrats nice SH. tell us how you achieved it and general experience and stuff. =)
:clap CONGRATS must tell us your setup
congrats. do the sh's make good parents?
Thanks for all the kind comments :) To be honest all I did was provide basic needs...a heavily planted tank, a period of starvation and lowering of temperature to simulate the dry season, and I started with a single female channa and 4 males in the hope of obtaining a pair. I had an obvious pair after about a month, and I saw what I thought was the male holding eggs (they are mouthbrooders) twice. In the last couple of weeks the male of the pair has been hidden behind a large java fern at the back of the tank and when I went to move them yesterday (I am moving house) I found the fry! They are now in their own tank with the parents in my new fish room, with the other channa directly next door to provide a target for the pair. Hopefully this will mean they don't start eating the fry :uhoh:

Yes they are amazing. In this species the male is the focal point of fry care, and the babies follow him around the tank. He is very protective and attacked the net when I moved them. The female is patrolling the perimeter of the tank (ie. the edges of the territory). She also apparently lays batches of infertile but nutritious "feeder" eggs to feed the fry but I haven't seen any evidence of this yet...
man oh man that is so cool. please keep us update on their growth

Nice looking kids you got there. Not as loud or stupid as real kids!

I kept them at room temperature for 6 weeks, then raised it to 84F. I have been waiting for my new flat to be ready and to be honest didn't even noticed they'd spawned until I went to move them. I had seen the male looking like he was holding eggs on 2 other occasions but was told they're a bit like some cichlids and it takes them a few tries to get it right. I'm so glad they finally did :woot:
Thanks everyone for all the kind comments. I will post more pics soon, but am building a fish room at the moment so it might be a few days

 Great!
You should post this in the "breeding" forum!
Your wish is my command :D This is the breeding tank, but I've now moved the pair to a separate tank, as I was worried the other channa in the tank might eat the fry. There's a couple of shots of the pair pre-spawning as well, the darker fish with the very blue fins is the male.
well done Matt and good pics.

That’s fantastic! Congrats on the success
How old/ big are the parents, They only look like juvies themselves..
You had a separate tank to “get them in the mood” or is that your normal tank?
Once again, congrats!
:grinyes:
These are channa spec "assam". They are a dwarf species. The fish in the pics are fully grown adults and are around 4 1/2" in length. I've had them for just under 6 months but they were almost fully grown when I got them so I'd guess they are at least a year old. That is the normal tank, which the pair share with 3 other males of the same species. Thanks for all the comments guys
how are the fry doing? got any new pics?
