bellevue, ne
im perty much just starting with aquarium keeping and i would like to tap into the fast knowlege of the people of this site. if it would be very helpful to me and all newbies if we could come up with a list of must haves for aquarium keeping beyond the standard back hanging filter and heater. and add a short explination of: the purpose of each peice of equipment, importance to the fishtank, and aproximate cost

thanks

Tank. holds water and fish. May also be used to hold other accesories. cost varies on size.

LOL, sorry, I couldnt resist. For real though, I wouldnt go without a good test kit for water parameters.

I use both. If the strips indicate a problem I bust out the liquid kit.
honestly it would probably be better to go with a liquid kit due to cost, but I'm fairly lazy when it comes to testing parameters.

i use a ph pen sometimes... :/ I know i shouldn't but hey, I am lazy =)

i use the liquid testers rather than the strips, it makes me feel like I am doing something constrictive!
hehe

all the best n00b!

:D

PH tester, thermometer, gravel cleaner/sludge pump, glass sponge cleaners, lights,
that's the extras I would invest in.

also if you are uber lazy, auto fish feeders :P unless you are thinking of keeping fish that require meat :P they I would stay away! hehe

cheers.

the fish!

they're kind of a type of equipment i guess :screwy:

Thermometer.......always good to know the temp without getting wet.......plenty cheap.

Mag-float.......to clean muck off the glass without getting wet.......5 to 8 bucks or so depending on size.

Fine, soft net sized appropriately.........you may need to move your fish........price varies widely.

Python water changer........I find this to be a necessity, but you could get by with a 5gal bucket & siphon hose........30 to 50 bucks or so depending on length.

Fish safe sponges & brushes........for cleaning filters & such........price varies but reasonable.

These were just a few things off the top that I use regularly.
