Here are a few better pics from the last time I went collecting. There is a white bass, male and female rainbow darters, and what I believe to be a bluntnose darter.

I have a Johnny Darter in a ten gallon tank here and I feed it frozen blood worms. I hope you kept the pair of Rainbow Darters. I hope I can get a pair of either Rainbow or Orange Throat Darters for my twenty-nine gallon tank.

I caught these fish about 15 minutes from downtown Louisville. I didnt keep any because they are a dime a dozen around here. In any giving seine of the net we can catch at least a few rainbow darters if not more! All the females were full of eggs as well.

They are only that colorful during the breeding season but they are still great fish to keep, I love darters, they blow corydoras out of the water.

My Iowa darters are not as colorful when they are not spawning, but they still maintain their blue and orange coloration, especially on the dorsal.

Oh yeah, I know...they are still very pretty fish and still maintain a lot of color but it's not as intense as it is when breeding. The picture might mislead people to think thats what they always look like so I just though I would point that out. I currently keep orangethroat and rainbow darters.

There are many natives that are just as colorful as neon or something but ar hardier which is why I don't understand why so few people keep natives.

They are pretty easy to find. First you will have to locate stream that is relativly clean and cool. Like I said these fish are just 15 minutes from Downtown Louisville so not 100% pristine but still clean.

Then go to walmart and get you a 6ft seine net and attach a broom stick to each end. Then you and a buddy go to a shallow portion of the creek with good flowing water. One person should hold each of the sticks as far apart as they can while While stepping on the bottom of the net a couple feet in from the sticks to keep the fish from going under it. The current should push the net into a "U" shape.

The other person walks about 10 yards upstream, then walks back towards the net kicking as many rocks and things as possible. Once he reaches the net each person grabs a pole and then lifts from the bottom catching all the critters that have wased into it!

Its easy and very fun!
