Here's mine. Only around 5-7 inches. By the way, im not really sure what type it is. LFS guy called it a marbled gar. But from what i read, those arent true gars. This one looks like its a true gar. I just made a wild guess...can anybody tell me? sorry for bad quality. I have a sucky camera.

hard to say from that pic, if you could post another one it would help with the ID greatly :)

from this shot i would say it could be a longnose gar given the pattern and snout size...but again, difficult to say for certain. definitely a Lepisosteus genus gar of some sort. great looking fish either way--

Here chompy is eating....He just wasnt into the shrimp. So I got a 10 gallon feeder tank for him. He's put down almost twenty in the last 3 days....about 5 or 6 a day.

I went out the other night (a week ago +/-) throwing my cast net to catch some talapia for eating in the Nueces River here in South Texas. We've been going through an extreme drought and most of the river is dried up. There are several small holes that contain lots of fish. I hit one of them the other night and I bet I pulled out 40 spotted gar, about 8 long-nose and maybe one alligator gar. The spotted gar ran from 6 inches to 16 inches so I kept a 13 incher for my 110 g aquarium pictured here:

He's eating well already. It's a shame that all those other gar are going to die. There were some very cool looking ones in there. If we don't get rain, they'll all be dead in about a month or less. :cry: There are lots of TX cichlids, sunfish, bass, tetras and other stuff that are gonna bite the dust too. Oh well, so goes nature. I wish I had more room for more gar. Heck this 110g is gonna be cramped here pretty quick.

I hear 10 feet (3 meters) said a lot...that's just for the smallest species. Asian needle nose gar get MUCH, MUCH LARGER...almost as large as blue whales

anyway, here's the latest crappy pic of my F/S....probably about 13 feet...er, I mean inches :D Yeah, I know, the pic is ridiculously bad. I took it in the dark with dirty glass :ROFL:

Here are my two original gator gars + the rescued one.

They share domain with two RTCs, Arapaima and Oscar. Two more paimas to join soon.

PS: the biggest gar is pushing pushing 3' now i think, the smallest one is about 1.5'

I had a ton of guppy fry at first. After they were gone he ate my guppy males...one by one.:D

This is Stretch, had him since 1991. WOW! I just realized that is a long time....He's survived half a dozen moves, and an out of tank adventure where he pushed out of the top lid of the tank and onto the carpet. I was a work at the time and my 12 yr old daughter called me screaming that he jumped out! Luckily I was able to talk her into putting him back. Still going strong....

I had this gar for the last 4 years now. Its a Longnose Gar and its about 25" long now. He is housed in 75 gallons tank alone which does fine. Soon.... I will be putting him in 125 gallons tank. Hope you like the picture.

dude you got a snail problem

although those snails can be aesthetically unpleasing, they actually help quite a bit in predator tanks as they quickly consume uneaten food and detritus. if they do become a problem (i.e. clogging filters, etc) i have often solved this problem with use of a lungfish...pretty much any species will keep them under control or wipe them out--

Wow you have a lot of gars. That is cool. I just got my first one. It is only about 6 inches long and I have only had it two days. It is doing well and has already ate a grasshopper! Could you tell me how often and what I should feed it? I am going to gets some shrimp eggs but am I suppose to hatch them in my tank or in another space? I will try to have a pic. posted by tonight.

Nice Gator Chester!

Here's my new one, finally found one big enough to not get eaten, and the pattern on it is crazy! I love the large spots more than the small spot type of floridas.
