Hi guys, I heard this site had a nice natives forum so I had to come check it out. :)
I have a 180 gallon (72x24x24") that I'm gonna be stocking with natives. These 2 pumpkinseeds are the first 2 inhabitants, they are about 6", there is also a 5" bluegill in with them but he is ugly and boring and didn't want his picture taken. You can kinda see him in one of the pics. I was thinking for the rest I would get a yellow bullhead, 4-5 yellow perch and maybe a 3rd pumpkinseed. What do you guys think?

natives are awesome... I'm just too cheap to buy a chiller LOL.

I'd stock that tank with some muskies/pikes, bass, flathead cat, snook, bowfin, and whatever other nice native predators. :D

I would like to get one, just not sure how well it would do with the sunfish. The sunfish seem to be pretty agressive. I'll probably give it a shot, I can always get rid of the sunfish if they are too aggressive.

I doubt the sunnies would be to aggresive because redfin pickerels are related to pike and muskie so it should be fine. I just caught a 2" pumpkinseed on Monday at Pewaukee River and it will go into a 150 gallon tank with a redfin pickerel, a few more pumkinseeds, and a pleco. Also, where do you live in Wisconcin? Welcome to MFK.

Pfffft....you don't need no stinkin chiller :grinno:. At least not for sunfish or most the fish you listed.

Great looking tank and nice pumpkinseed as well. They are great fish, very much like oscars if you have ever had them. Once you keep sunfish you realize how over rated cichlids are. Just kidding, cichlids are great but sunfish are just as good and personally I prefer them.

:iagree: I would pick sunnies over cichlids any day.

A sunfish would own a pickerel/pike/muskellunge anyday. While members of the pike family do eat other fish they are not very aggresive and probably won't bother any fish that won't fit down it's throat. Sunfish however are rather aggresive, putting many cichlid to shame. That's not to say it won't work but don't think that just because it's a pike it's safe.

Those are a protected species, I think you need a permit not only to keep them but also to sell them. The buyer might need a permit as well.

It is a hit or miss with some sunfish. P'seeds are supposed to be one of the least aggressive sunfish so it might work. I'm planning on housing mine with warmouth and maybe blue/orange spotted sunfish. The problem with redfin pickerel and other fish in general are that the other fish might nip at the fins thinking they are food and eventually the pickerel won't be able to swim and will die.

I didn't know that so I'll have to figure something out then.

I live in Evansville, it's near Janesville. I just got back from vacation near Minocqua, I got a few baby rock bass and 7-8 baby perch, I had to get rid of the pumpkins so they wouldnt eat my new guys. I think im gonna have to end up ordering my pickerel, I'm not a very good fisherman lol. I also changed the white sand to a river gravel, large black poop+white sand=mess

I think it will make a very nice tank, you could also add a dozen smallish golden shiners or 3-5 large ones. They move differently than the other fish and provide a shape contrast.

Ok heres a couple pics of the babies, yellow perch and rock bass. The perch are about 2-2.5" long and the bass are about 1-1.5".32282
