I think this year will be extra special when it comes to fishing for PB in Florida.

I've caught over two dozen the past three months without much effort and caught four earlier today.

Will try to beat my personal best record set at the start of the new milennium and try to have some fun doing it.

Please join me by posting your PB catches for this year!

Here's where I caught my PBs today with my new favorite lure. Had to break it in::D

I shipped a couple of 4-5 inch PB juvies last month to NY for over $ 50 via Fedex. Both DOA I'm told. That's the last time I'm ever shipping these fishys.:(

Before that I shipped several batches of 8 esch farther North and West of NY with no problems when It was colder!

I've decided the effort and time to do it is not worth my time. I'm just a retired fellow trying to enjoy my remaining years and not have to run around making Fedex richer.;)

1 to 2 hours South. However, It's a private community lake. Only residents allowed. Some neighbors have asked me to help them locate the fish in our area. I'm just trying to help
the local folks. Might even posts spots in the lake with PB just waitng to be caught in the future.;)

I'm sure the fishing for PB is pretty much the same all over South Florida South of Broward County. I'm also told there are some spots in the Everglades near Homestead with even hotter fishing action.:)

hey juan...got a bunch of pics of catches but a bit too lazy to post right now...this past trip down was very good due to the spawn...was averaging some 40 per day, with most from canals south and east of you....east cutler is a good source for the spangled guys and large amounts were taken south of homestead and florida city. If you are looking to meet up with some locals that are hardcore pea fishermen check out the pbass threads here and contact some people...alot of guys local to you:(skim through the salty threads as there are tons of pics of peas in the pbass reports almost daily)

If you need some maps to some places let me know...alot are only 15 min drive from you;) alot of the places we used to fish are so overfished now that we go further south to a few spots that some locals had told me about...that is where we did most of our fishing this past trip....but falls mall and coral reef regional park(aka midas park) still produced well up your way. I dont do much fishing for peas from ponds and lakes down there due to the look of the lake bass, but have fished your lake from up by the baseball field and the 2 parks...also a few above the gunclub on tamiami and north of the airport.....nowadays I look for these guys:D

I'll check the other spots, when I fish out my backyard lake.:D

My brother and I tried doing that in his back yard, about an hours drive South of Orlando, in Lake Wales where he had a half acre pond. The PB did not survive the first Winter.:(

However, He's got some monster large mouths there. That's were I go if I want to catch some netive fish, which is seldom nowadays. I'm happy with the PBs here.

It's possible in Citrus County, about 1 hour North of Tampa, where Spring waters comes out of the ground at a constant 75 degrees year round. I've bought some land there, and we might be building our future Home there in a couple of years.:D

I've caught 6 so far with the same lure and hooked two other Pbass that got away today. You have to be quick when taking them out of the water, otherwise their lips give way and you lose them. You may drag them along the banks or sand to prevent that.

Sometimes the location does not make that possible and you have to lift them. The two I lost, I actually hooked 5 times. Lost both during lifting though.

So far, all catches have been released soon after their pictures were taken.:)

Nice looking Peacocks. Great color. Hard to tell do they have the RED EYES?

Good Question. I don't really know. They are all back in the lake. I have two pairs though from earlier this month. I'll take a peek in the morning and see the eye color.

Speaking of color, the cover and light or lack thereof seems to affect the color of these fishy. These were all caught around white sandy beach areas in the daytime and they all show light bright colors. I've caught fish in darker parts of the lakes and they have darker color tones.

Also the size and age of the fish affects the overall dark specking on their bodies. The bigger fish tend to lose much of their stripes or bars and replaced with what looks like an explosion of their bars into dark specks on the bodies.

Jed,

These ones' are for you. Caught them with one of the sinking lures you sent.

How do you want them? WHole? Fillets? or Steaked? LOL:ROFL:

The lure had no trouble attracting strikes. However, it's easy to lose fish due to the smaller hooks. It took 5 strikes before I hooked the first one. Three strikes, on the second one. Also, both got off the hook. Luckily, they fell on the Beach and not the water. A third was not as lucky. It got off the hook and swam away! make that luckier!:D

residents are required to be licenced;)

http://myfwc.com/license/

Do I need a freshwater or saltwater fishing license or both? In general, you need a freshwater license to take freshwater fish and a saltwater license to take saltwater fish, unless one of the exemptions specified on this Web site applies to your situation. Obviously if you are fishing in pure fresh water where no saltwater species live, you need a freshwater license and likewise if you are fishing in the ocean you need a saltwater license.
However, when you get into estuarine type areas where salt and fresh water commingle and fish of both types can be found the issue becomes less clear. The interpretation of the rule is:

1. You need either a freshwater, saltwater or combination license (or appropriate exemption) to take fish (take is legally defined as taking, attempting to take, pursuing, molesting, capturing, or killing any fish, or their nests or eggs by any means whether or not such actions result in obtaining possession of such fish or their nests or eggs).
2. If you are using species specific gear, your license should be appropriate (e.g., freshwater or saltwater) to the species you are targeting, and
3. Otherwise you need an appropriate type license to keep your catch and must immediately release any species for which you are not licensed. License requirements follow the species of fish, regardless of where they are caught. In other words, if you only have a freshwater license and are primarily fishing for largemouth bass or bream (freshwater species) in a river, but happen to catch a red drum (a saltwater species), you must immediately release the red drum.

exceptions are :
*Any resident 65 years of age or older, who has in her or his possession proof of age and residency. A free license may be obtained from any tax collector's office upon proof of age and residency.

*Florida residents certified as totally and permanently disabled, who possess a Florida Resident Disabled Person Hunting and Fishing Certificate (see application, requires PDF). See also ADA

Here's the exemptions:

FRESHWATER EXEMPTIONS: (Up to Index)

Although the following exemptions apply, individuals may always choose to purchase a license as a way to contribute to fish and wildlife conservation. Purchasing a license also helps the FWC receive more of the excise taxes spent on fishing tackle and motor boat fuels under Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration.

Any child under 16 years of age.

Any person hunting or fishing in the person's county of residence on the person's homestead or the homestead of the person's spouse or minor child, or any minor child hunting or fishing on the homestead of her or his parent.

Does not apply to private lakes or ponds. However community lakes and ponds might have their own deed restrictions or laws;)
exemptions were included in the link...if you read down further there is the one for pond/lake...as reads free only if under 20 acres, but if over:

**Any person fishing in a fish pond of 20 acres or more, where the pond owner has purchased a fish pond license at a fee of $3 per surface acre.
private or commercial property applies.

I was merely responding to the statement made that residents did not need a license...didnt want to give anyone who didnt know the risk of being fined in florida.

by the way...if you havent tried them...rapala x-raps are killer on pbass...they are a fast retrieve lure and come in a variety of colors.

I tried the Xraps. Works good but a bit hard to retrieve nicely IMO compared to the other Rapalas. Too bad they don't come in a 3 treble hook model.

Matt,

Here is more info on the XRAPS (http://www.rapala.com/products/luresdetail.cfm?modelName=x-rap&freshorsalt=Fresh)

As one of the exemptions states residents do not need a license if they are fishing in their county of residence. As far as saltwater fishing license goes, residents don't need it either if fishing from shore or structures connected to shore. So, you may bag that saltwater specie if you happen to be fishing freshwater without the saltwater license but on shore or bridge:D
There's lots of nuances to these requirements. However thanks for the clarification:D

I have those in two different colors. The holding capability is much better on the twitchbaits I use which are Mirro Lures. This is not endorsement of the "Mirro", I just find them to be better at holding the PB once hooked;)

I also have a sinking version of the rapalas. Same problem as the x-raps. Will probably try the Rapala with three sets of treble hooks. I like the bb model of the husky, very similar color to my favorite twitchbait.

**
Any person hunting or fishing in the person's county of residence on the person's homestead or the homestead of the person's spouse or minor child, or any minor child hunting or fishing on the homestead of her or his parent.

this above exemption refers to personal owned property which must be of ownership of you/spouse/or children fishing or hunting on it....this basically states you are allowed to fish/hunt on your personal property without license.

Jed,

Thanks for the Amazon DVDs.

I saw how your Japanese clone in that DVD was handling and releasing his catches with ease and a minimum of potential injuries to the fish. Most often without getting his hands soiled or wet.:)

Those video were amazing. I'm just glad I don't have to travel that far, contend with caymans, anacondas, and hack through the jungle, to fish for Peacock Bass. Just wish we had Temensis here though.:(

All these years I've been here and I've never been to the Bass Pro Shop. It's been on my must go to place though for the past ten years. Maybe, this week or next, there's a a bunch of places up in Broward, I've got to see.

Maybe I'll find one of those fishing flatforms powered by an electric motor or maybe one of those water bikes for fishing as other mechanized means are not allowed on the lake and pathways. Not even those gas powered trolleys or skateboards for kids.

Anyhow, will try to catch some PB or maybe go after those Pacus tomorrow...

Today was the slowest day fishing our lake so far this year. Was it due to 6/6/6?

Not likely. Actually it was a confluence of events that made this day not so good for fishing. I had to spend the whole morning at the Dr.'s office for tests and did not get back home till about 2PM. Started fishing by 3 pm and noticed that kids were all over the beaches. I guess their summer vacation has started. That's bad news for fishing. They were splashing all over the beach areas and muddying up the water.

Anyhow I managed to land one 15 inch bull PB and was able to give one of Jed's floating/surface/diving lures a rigorous tryout.

Here's the catch and only catch of the day:)
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=20828&size=1

Here's a closer look at the catch on a lip grip. It's a dandy tool to have for taking control of fish out of the water preventing it from hurting itself.

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=20826&size=1

This is Jed's lure that was worked out. About two dozen cast produced 3 strikes and one hookup. Got it within inches of the beach before it managed to shake off the lure.

Yep..S**T happens. I had to time my casts in between the wave of murky water that was washing over my target area from the splashes of the kids frolicking on the beach.:D

That lip grip is perfect for fish you want to keep. It minimizes body injuries to the fish and cuts on your fingers when removing the hooks.:) The one I found only has a built in tape measuring device unlike the one on the DVDs which appears to have a builtin weighing scale based on the weight comments by the fisherman.

Today's catch is for Senyor Guppy. He opened my eyes when he landed those three PBs. I have never caught PB in the area where he took them.

This one was caught right around that area:D

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=20853&size=1

The following was caught on my X-rap lure about a mile up the trail from the previous catch. Dmack is absolutely right about these lures being irresistible to PBs. A note of caution though, if you cast it where a pair with fries are, the fries will swarm the lure. I did that and snag two fries that were about 3 inch each. Both are in my tank of feeder guppies to recover from their wounds. Never had a chance to hookup with the parents though due to the swarming frenzy of the fries:eek:

Also you have to be quick in getting your catch out of the water and over land or in the boat. This catch got off the hook before I had a chance to remove them. Had to pull it out of the grass with the lip grip to prevent further damage.

If I can make a suggestion...

When using those lip grip tools (we call them Boga-Grips over here), its advisable to support the weight of the fish with a hand under the stomach of the fish to avoid damaging the delicate blood vessels in the gill latch. You can imagine the damage that can be done to a heavy fish that is thrashing around only supported by the lips.

Of course, if you intend to eat the fish it doesn't matter.

hey juan...got a bunch of pics of catches but a bit too lazy to post right now...this past trip down was very good due to the spawn...was averaging some 40 per day, with most from canals south and east of you....east cutler is a good source for the spangled guys and large amounts were taken south of homestead and florida city.

They ship very badly in temps under 60 degrees. 60 to 75 being ideal. I have seen lots of them in area lakes and spoke to someone who has caught and shipped them .
I havent fished for any . Do you eat them? I intend to catch a few small ones to keep as pets.
