I have been around Fathead Minnows my whole life, but until recently never thought about keeping them in a aquarium. Now that I have a empty 10 gallon, I would like to give them a try.
How many do you recommend for a 10 gallon?
I know that they tend to breed like crazy, but do the parents eat their fry?
Are they picky eaters or will they accept flakes?
What kind of tankmates do you keep with them? I would like to keep them native, but anything interesting is fine.
Thanks - Jighead

the only reason id keep em is for a constant fish food supply.
thats just my opinion
id just say put a 2 way breeder in the top and wait, pretty soon youll have more babies than you can handle
other livebearers and killies as tankmates?

I have never kept them except as feeders or bait. Small madtoms and darters as well as killies should work as long as the sizes are similar.

I wrote an article on fathead minnows, it's somewhere on this site but I'm too lazy to search through the pages. Here is the same article I wrote but on a different site.

I have a them with darters, fatheads, killies, and chubs. About 30 fish in all, although I frequently cull the weaker fish and use them as feeders.
Mine eat goldfish flakes and bloodworms.

I have about 30 of them in my 10gal.
I also have about 50 in my 55gal with my goldfish. It's pretty cool. The minnows stay up top and the goldfish stay on the bottom.
I got them from one of the ponds by my house. Whenever I do water changes on the 10gal I just put new water in from the ponds. The 55gal is brackish. I also feed them bloodworms and they seem to like it.

I dont know about fathead minnows, but I have some California Roaches that I keep in a 10 gallon. They are some of the most entertaining fish ive ever seen. They love to eat and will accept any form of food. Whenever I tap on the glass they all gather in the corner, and if I stick a flake or bloodworm right above the water level they will jump to get it until one sucessfully does so.
