I recently purchased a Pleco or Suckermouth Catifiish. Its a really cool fish, but I did a little googling to find out what the critter eats and was suprised to discover my little 2 inch catfish buddy would eventually grow to a foot long! All the sites say this, but do any of you know if thats actually their average size? I'd prefer not to have my Pleco covering a good length of my aquarium!

Curse that lady at the retailer store for not warning me that my wittle catfish would soon be a monster!

Welcome to MFK!!!

Depending on species, you may have a cat that can attain 1, 2, and even 3 feet in length.

Do you have any pics of your pleco? Depending on the species, it can get BIG or not. ;)

Best regards.

Daniel.

I believe it to be a Common Pleco. I purchased it at a Walmart Store. http://gallery.fishowners.com/cm/displayimage.php?pos=-3

If it's from Wal-mart it's almost certainly a common plecostomus. Yes, they can grow up to and over a foot long. I have even seen them in the 18" range, get rid of it or find a larger tank.

 Yeah! Now that I think about it, a fish that big is pretty cool! I'll even be able to remark how cool it is for a long time. I found out they live for over ten years. Some people even say 30 years old! I wonder if mine will live that long. :shark:

that pleco was awsome but i belive it was lost in a pump failure along with lots of other fish. its a shame. yes get rid of the pleco unless you wanna get a huge tank(which wouldnt be a bad idea

I have a common one at 19" right now. He was 17" when I bought him around 4 months ago! Good luck. Mine lives in a 350 gal pond.

hmmm common. could be one of a few. Hypostomus punctatus gets to 12", hypostomus plecostomus 24". Lots are sold as commons, i've seen rubberlips and gibbys sold as commons too. post a pic.
