How long as the tank been set up?

eventually you are going to end up with dead critters if you keep them mixed like that.

True and also is way overcrouded. 2 or max 3 fire bellied toads or the same amount of newts is the maximun I would recomend for that size. Keep the newt in there and get a bigger one for the toads

tanks been set up for a long time.... i thank you's for the advice.... but i am already in the works of setting something bigger up.. just showing pictures b4 the new setup... reason for so many tods and newts mixed is caus ei run into alot of sad individuals who cant take care of them and say il let them loose outside so i just say il take them knowing i will care for the animals way better...

Caring for themmuch better would mean they would have their seperate vivs. The newts in one and the fire bellies in another.

How long is a long time?

You could always just give the newt to a pet store if you want to seperate them but either way the actual set up itself is very nice.

My brother in law keeps Bombinas here outside all yr long and they breed but in a set like yours . They will also breed.

the tank itself has been set up for years.... not with all the inhabitants... just with my 2 original toads... over the past few months everyone is getting rid of there toads and newts so i take them instead of let them be released into the wild, like past said i appreciate the advice kearth but i know what im doing, and the other viv is being set up... my money doesnt grow on trees so when i get the money i do the job.. they arent in urgent danger or being kept in a dirty garbage can.. the tank is clean well kept and they are well fed..... you make it seem like i have 400 frogs and newts in a blender with sewer water... its 4 young toads and 2 newts all of same size in a 20 gal... if what you were giving is advice than thank you... however if you were trying to make me look ignorant than thats not appreciated cause i take good care of all my pets....

i was not trying to make you look ignorant at all.

both of those, the fire bellies and the newts, secrete a toxin that is harmfull to each other. In time that toxin will start killing off the tank inhabs.

Just offering advice that is all. I dont want to see either of them start dying and in time it will happen. I understand it take money just please seperate them as soon as you can before it becomes to late.

I have been raising and breeding frogs for years just passing on what I have learned.

well in that case i am sorry.. and as of this month they will both be seperated...... i realized the toxin thin tho which is why every 2 days i change the water in the tank... but yea as of dec 1 they will be seperate

Another big danger is that both species you have in there are very voracious and specialy the newts can rip a feet or hand out of your toads, and then you risk loosing both animals because of the already mencioned toxins. And then its the breeding risks. If by any means one of your species enters breeding, testosterone filled males can try to mate with a animal of the wrong species (this happens!) and risk drowning it in the mating enbrace. Here the most likely culprid are the toads toards the newts. You DONT need a large or fancy tank to house a pair of newts, any 20 or so gallon aquarium you can get really cheap at a garage sale will sufice plus some peaces of cork, some twigs and some Anacharis and thats it. The risks are simply not worth it, your doing good by changing the water every few days and by sheltering thouse otherwise homeless animals (I would like to know what was going true the minds of the people that considered dumping them!). Why not going the full circle and give yourself the peace of mind and relax by knowing your pets are not going to harm each other?
