I currently have a 7-ish inch ornate (who also recently bit my ropefish to death) and while I was at my favorite LFS this week, one of the guys who works there asked me if I would like to take his delhezi off his hands, as he's moving and he'd rather give his fish to someone he knows has some experience with polypterus. He said it's about 9" TL. My tank is 125 gallons. Do you think it could work? I'm much more inclined to take you bichir-nuts' advice now that you advised me against the ropefish (in my defense, the ornate didn't eat him, he just bit him :D ).

Or should I pass on a free 9" delhezi for the sake of my fish and the delhezi?

how big is your tank?

size-wise the two would work. the ornate might nip at the delhezi in the beginning seeing how it bit the ropefish, but the delhezi is thicker (than the rope) and larger so it may be ok, unless your ornate turns out to be a psycho. you have other bichirs in the tank?

The tank is 125 gallons, footprint 72" x 18" and my ornate usually stays in one corner in my driftwood "cave" all the time. My ornate is not really very much like what I've read anyway. LOL He's certainly not psychotic, but the addition of the ropefish seemed to wake up his mean side a little. On the other hand, that tank still has some giant danios in it that he hasn't even attmepted to eat.

There are no other bichirs in my tank besides the ornate.

DO NOT PASS IT UP!!! I just paid around 50 bucks for a little 4" Delhezi.....
They will be fine together....I have 4 different types of Bichers in one tank, and 3 different types in another.....They all get along just fine.....

ok...so the ornate just bit the rope once and wasn't seriously harassing it, right??

i think you can give the delhezi a try. sometimes adding a 2nd bichir when there's been only one in the tank might be a bit more difficult, but if you are gonna add one, it might as well be now with a larger bichir. i say go for it. make sure theres enough hiding spots.

Yeah, he only bit him once. But once was enough.

The guy was teasing me and said he's not so sure he wants to give it to me now that he knows I killed a ropefish. LOL I said in fairness, the ropefish was trying it's damnedest to kill itself and then my ornate just got cranky with him, so I had little to do with it. LOL

I'll call Craig and let him know I can take it, then, unless there is other forthcoming advice to advise me not to.

They should be fine just watch for major agression -Anne

hell yeah grab him up

I have a Delhezi in my 125 and I just picked up an Ornate last night... lol The only problem I have is the Ornate is half the size of the Del.. so I have to grow him out a bit first.. Those are my 2 fave types of Bichirs!!
