View Full Version : The King.....
I would like to start a thread for those who either own dovii now or who have owned them in the past. And please for those who dis-like this fish please stay out of this thread. Lets show pictures/videos or experiences of this awesome predator.......
I have owned Umbri,RedDevil,Trimac,FlowerHorn,Buttikoferi,Peaco ckBass,Jaguar,Mota's,RedTerror,GreenTerror,Cons,Os cars,JardiniAro,RTC,MarblePimCat,Bichirs and a handful of others and no fish has brought me more joy then my 12"Male Dovii that i purchased from Rapps about a year and a half ago. He takes owning large Cichlids to the extreme for me. He has killed everything i've tried to house with him since he was about 7" and has been on his own since. Soon i will post some pictures and a short video of him. If you get within 6ft. of his tank he will attack the front glass relentlessly. Whats awesome is to hear is 1/4" teeth hit the glass when he pounds it. Sounds like someone taking a key and hitting it up hard against the glass. So come on dovii fans sare your love with The King...........

I really like doviis. I bought one for 5.99 from the LFS (just a little dude) and put him in a temp. tank with a blood parrot and texas cichlid. He was about the same size as the parrot so I thought it would be ok for a while (till I could get another tank setup). Much to my suprise, the texas and parrot tag teamed this little guy and killed it! I need to go on a quest to find another one now.

I had a little dovii once. Got him for a dollar at a fish auction. He was about 1in and he got to about three. Then he started to pick on my old aro that I use to have so my aro ate him. He was a really neat fish and wouldn't back down from any of the larger fish which was his downfall. Although once I have the room I will be getting another one.

My male is definitely the coolest fish I've owned. Very aggressive toward anything besides his female. His territory goes about 3 feet outside of the 240g that he's in. Besides silver dollars and tinfoil barbs, he's killed 2 of the 3 plecos in his tank. This is an older pic, and he's now 13" - 14".

If that was for me, I had them in a 46 gallon tank. all of the fish were less than 3". If he could have hung in there he would have had bigger and better really soon:(

Along with a pair of Dovii that my husband and I have that recently had a few hundred fry, we also have a trimac, (3) oscars, 1 albino,1 red tiger, 1 common.
Three baby flowerhorn, 1 pike, 1 silver arowana, 1 black piranha(approx. 6 in)
Two plecos. One spotted puffer.
Over time we've owned, blood parrots(boring), red devils(annoying), tin foil barbs(cause headache from speeding around constantly, 5 baby black piranha(all died together for some reason after buying three days prior).
We find the Dovii most interesting mainly because of thier range of behaviors towards different family members, our house cat at the glass and any other fish we have placed in the same tank with them.
Since they bred after owning them for but 3 months our interest has risen for the dovii.
Experiencing their parental skills as a team at such a young age has truly been a great learning experience.
How big is your setup?
He's currently in a 120Tall (60"-18.5"-27").....But i have a 180 for him when he outgrows the 120. My Jardini and Peacock Bass currently are in the 180 but i'm purchasing a 300+in the near future. Rallysman you have some amazing fish i especially like your Jag. I hope your quest for a male dovii is a success...They are awesome when they get big...:headbang2

Kept Dovii around 10 years ago, absolutely loved those fish, I had a breeding pair and the male took the attitude that only he was allowed to interact with me and used to give the tankmates little warnings to hide if I cam enear, could put hand in tank and he wouldn't nail me he was a lovely fish, used to eat feeders up to hafl his size and would take three fish in mouth at once realising he had to thes pit out and re swallow them, lovely fish, grew to ten inch then had to rehome as didn't have the time they deserved.

I've kept seven doviis in the past.
Got my first batch of two at 2". Luckily, I had a pair, and they bred in my community 240.
Funnily, it was the female that was by far the more vicious than the male. They bit and attack the other fish, but did not actually kill any (giant gorami, black belt, red terror etc).
After four years, the male was 18", female 9". I made the mistake of introducing a jardini. The doviis were breeding at the time and held their own. I took the fries out, and they became more docile. The jardini killed them both after a while, along with everything in the tank. To this day, I regret losing those doviis more than any other fish :(
I bought another batch of five at 2 " as well a couple of years ago. Grew them out until about 5", kept the nicest male, and gave the rest to friends. Recently, that male at 14" was killed by a butti.
The only fish these doviis ever killed in my care was when the second male killed a 10" flowerhorn. Except during breeding, the doviis I have kept have never been as vicious as some of the stories I've heard. They're magnificent fish, my favourite cichlids. Trying to find more at the moment.
Wow that must have been one badass Butti....My male dovii when it was 10" killed a 10"RD and a 12" Buttikoferi.....But i guess you had a laid back male dovii.... Also how big was the Jardini and the dovii's when the Jar killed them. My Jardini is about 10" and has yet to show any serious aggression...

Seeing all this talk about dovii lately has reminded me that I would really like to keep a pair one day. What is the best way of sexing them when they are young (2" or less), or would my best bet be to purchase several, grow them out, and find a pair later?

That butti was a bit of a psycho, he killed a few tankmates. But he was the only butti I've ever kept, maybe they're all like that?
The jardini was about 20 in. Once the reach that size, they are really thick impressive animals. The male dovii was 18 in. Maybe I just had the exception to the rule, that is, doviis that were not that aggressive

At 2", they're pretty pale, washed out (colorwise) animals. I couldn't tell at that size. I was able to distiguish the sex at about 4-5 in.

Could you post some pictures of that 18" Dovii? He must have been impressive. How about the jardini do you still have him? Any pictures? He must have been a beast.

Hell anything thats 20" that can kill a 18"Male Dovii has to be impressive. I'd also like to see pics of this monster....:grinyes:

That male dovii was 4 years old when he was killed. He grew very quickly initially,
something like 14-15 inches in two years, but slowed down in the last two.
The jardini I bought was at 20 in already. I quickly learnt why he was kept by himself in the lfs. I did not know at that time jars were so aggressive, as non of the literature mentioned it, thought I just had a particularly psycho individual.
Like I mentioned before, it was funny that it was the female that was the more aggressive of the two, although she was half his size. I used to feed them live adult mice that we caught. The male swallowed them, but the female always tried, but was unable to. She'll normally rip the head of and spit out the decapitated carcass, making a mess of the tank.
question for those of you that are experienced with Dovii's. My big tank is currently a 150 gallon predatory tank with my 4 Lima Shovelnose in it along with a few other fish to fill in the space. I have tried and tried over the past year to get fish to add to my tank however anything below 6" or so gets eaten almost instantly my the limas. So i finally decided to just by some babies (trying jaguars atm) untill they are big enough to add. My question is, what do you think would be better company for the Limas (they dont care about anything they cant eat) and wouldnt harass them, the Jags or some Dovii. I am just wondering because I just recently started on the Jags so I figure now would be the time to restart if the Dovii would work any better. Thanks for you help.
definately don't go with dovii, they are far to aggressive for lima's....The only catfish IMO that can be housed with dovii is RTC. Plus your 150 would be big enough for 1 male dovii and thats it. If you enjoy your limas just keep them in there......

I am not bashing dovii just once more stating that all the one I kept have also not been able to hold their own for long periods of time. yes they will defend themselves but never have any parachromis I've kept killed a fish that stood its' ground regularly only fish that fled. I would like to keep dovii again. I do like the size they get. all fish have a place so dovii will one day be kept by me just have to find the right tankmates that they can live with.
As promised heres my boy from Rapps............:swear:

Awesome tail/dorsal/anal fin. And the green mask.
Jags look like they're smiling and doviis look like they're grinning.
Im uploading the video now to the video section.........
Thank you everyone for keeping the thread clean..................:grinyes:
