So cliff, I'm wondering if, all in all, you are happy with that 1100 gallon pond, I'm really considering going the same way in the next 8 months and I'm wondering how you would rate it? I know you're working on a new pond, but are you going to keep the 1100 going?

I rate it a 6 out of 10 for my situation. Maybe I just got a crappy one, but it leaks like crazy. I did a test filll when I first got it and it leaked. So I drained it found the leak and fixed it. Added a internal filter and bam leaks again. So again drain it and patch it and refill it. There were no holes just that when it would get scrapped it will leak and water will build up after a while. I tried adding sand hoping that tiny debris would fill any holes, well leaks worse. Stopped leaking for a while, I added rocks. 2 weeks later leaking again. Been leaking continously for 3 months now. Catfish punched a hole in the side one time and I had to patch that. It's just too aggrevating for me, but there's other members who say they never have a problem, but with all the problems I have fixed I could have built the new pond by now. So I am giving up on making it stop leaking and just building the bigger pond. I have the plans, most of the lumber is free, and I have help. So just time to get started! lol. I say just make sure you are really carefull and you could make it last a year or two probably. I can't tear it down to repatch it ever week or two so it's just gonna leak until the big one is finished. You may want to talk to other's about theirs as mine could just be a bad one, or one that sat in storage at a store for a few years and got dry rotted a little. Over all it works for the purpose of keeping fish, but IMO it's not the answer.

Gonna take a lil while I would imagine since I will be doing most of the work myself. Going to seal the inside with sweetwater epoxy after doing some fiberglass. Only doing like one coat of fiber glass and like 4 coats of epoxy, plus there will be a 5.5'x2.5' viewing window. The tank as of right now will be 14' x 10' x 3.5' Those are the outside dimensions the internal dimensions will be more like 13' x 9' x 3' The filter will be
10' x 3' x 3.5' sealed the same way as the tank at the same height as the tank. The filter will have a bottom drain that will provide gravity upflow hopefully keeping the bottom a lil cleaner. It will also have one overflow. The filter will be in two sections at the end of the tank. They both will have an upflow into the first chamber, which will be a settling chamber, after it flows up through that chamber it will overflow through poly batting into the drip tray. The drip tray will have a section under each that will be roughly 2' x 3' x 3.5' of wetdry pot scrubbies. Then it will flow into the basin where the pump will push the water back into the tank. That's pretty much it. It will also be insulated like house walls, and have a big sturdy lid with plenty of cross bracing.

Haven't been on the boards lately that much but just reviewed your thread man. Really sorry to hear about the Jau, I will do my best to track you down another one because shortly after xmas I'm going on a rare catfish binge I think and I just might know someone able to find one...
In other news have you heard back from Dre yet about that fish you and I were looking for? I haven't heard anything from him in about a month and a half after I was told that the collectors were busy finding us some...just curious. I'm going to email him again later this week to find out what the deal is. Also some interesting pangasius news if you're interested pm me about that.
Lastly, with regards to the pond, I think you might have just gotten a "lemon." Mine was leak tested with various stages of water when I first set it up and no problems. Added 300lbs of pool filter sand and large driftwood pieces, still no problems. Fish have been in there for 6 months or more including several fish in the 2ft range (catfish) and still no leaks of any kind (knock on wood) I wouldn't rate it as the best setup by any stretch of the imagination but it gets the job done. Aesthetically pleasing, certainly not; functional, absolutely. I to plan on building a larger/better pond in the future but my means are at the limit on space right now so mine will have to wait. I'm looking forward to a full how to write up on your new pond and glad to hear that all your others are recovering from their "winter" Let it be known also now that apparently some of those SA cats are a little more cold hardy than most have thought; not necessarily long term but that temp is significanlty lower than any they would have encountered otherwise by 10 degrees or more probably and they survived. I will be breaking my pond down in the next week for some major maintence per se and it will be down for about 2 weeks. Hopefully if all goes as planned the fish will be enjoying a 2 week stay all expenses paid at "key promotional music" the dallas world aquarium! I have been talking with the owner/head of the aquarium and I think they have the space to house them for me while I rework the pond. It should be a good time to get some accurate measurements both length and weight on some of my bigger shovelnose.
Props on the growth of your little hyrbid, I'm toiling with the idea of investing in another one but I just don't want to get another and have it spotaneously die on me like the last one within a few days...also those niger x tsn hyrbids have been catching my eye lately and they don't seem to be plagued by the same sudden death that the marble x rtc's are... Those limas are looking great! ~Trent

My wife happened to that one. She unplugged the tank I had him in while I was out at work, and hmm, for some reason she didn't realize that my fish might need filtration and air. So long story short he was almost a skeleton when I got home after a 5 day tour of duty.
Tnx for all the great comments guys. Trent there's someone working on the one you want the most right now. I'll keep you updated if I am able to get anything. I appreciate the heads up on the possible jaus. I am definitely pocketing some money for one just in case so that I can pounce on it.

Big pond, plus he's about 15" and the rtc still is only about 16" I feel safe. He's growing faster than the rtc since the rtc got sick it cut some growth rate off. He's eating again now so we'll see who grows faster! Had the rtc for 7 months got him at 1.5" and had the mrtc for 5 months got him at 4"

When I went to get the pond ready for his arrival. I noticed that all the fish in there had went through a growth spurt since the last time I had the tarp off the top. They are huge. He'll have to wait another month or two before he's ready to go in with the big boys. He's a little smaller than I though once I went to net him. Some of the catfish in the big pond are approaching 20". I'd have to say that the albino channel cat is right at that mark along with lumpy the oldest tsn. The rtc is right at 17" and fat as all get out. The hybrid mrtc is only about 14-15" and way too thin to be in with the rtc. His head is maybe 2-2 1/2" wide, and the rtc is 4" wide. That spells disaster wtih a newly introduced fish!!!:WHOA:

Cliff, you owe me thanks for helping you find those surprises! :-) :-) :-)
Yes, thank you very, very much! You came through in a big way to help me get my dream fish. Now if the air ports will cooperate and answer their phones I can get my fish tomorrow. If not it will be yet another week! grrrrrrrr:irked: I was hoping just for the Filamentosum, but getting the other two was a big suprise. These are three of the catfish that I have been researching for years, and never thought I would ever be able to own. I was hoping to be able to study skeletal articulations in a museum someday, but own one? This is nuts! Might have to up the gallonage on the 4000 gal. I need a quick fix to my leakage problem. So first tank will be in the 750 gal range. Like 8' x 4' x 3'. Then I can start on the Fila-tank of 6k+ gals. I'm just going to save the materials and plan it to the T! Shouldn't take too long to complete the 750 gal.

I wonder if its your airport that is causing the delay? John was really quick in telling me when he can ship. Maybe there aren't very many flights going to montana or something like that.

Freebies would be a plus, hopefully they're catfish lol. Fish that aren't catfish generally end up as catfish food in my tanks. Somehow the 4 oscars living in the big pond with my rtc, channel catfish, and 2 tsn have not been eaten yet. They are fairly large though. One is pretty small and stunted. I just rescued 2 oscars and a free 55 gal tank that they lived in. That might just be the first home of the new cats lol. 3 of the four have huge growth potentials. I just hope I can keep up with them. I always manage somehow!

If you can't house any catfish you own, I promise that you can grow it out and give it to me for a finder's fee, plus shipping lol. Anyone interested? Get a planiceps to growout for me lol!
LOL. I don't see the big deal about planiceps anyways. Whats the update on your cats? Being shipped monday?

Well seeing as how I have a crappy cavalier as my vehicle, montana is covered in snow, and the closest border is 4 hours away, I'm not willing to do that one lol. There's a mountain pass in every direction except canada! I get home later tonight. Right now no snow, but I'm not holding my breath for monday. I'll just play it safe, and he says we'll try later in the week.

KNTRYgrl, were both jaus together in one tank??? Do you think they killed each other? Another member mentioned that his jaus showed aggression so he separated each other.

Sorry for the loss kntrygrl. My 2 are still together, initially when I first put minnows in the tank, one of them got really territorial ,then once he had a full belly he was fine, and they dont seem to fight anymore. I have a lot of minnows in and they can catch dinner quick, I think if they hunted for along time with no minnows caught, and kept meeting another brother they would fight. They stay on opposite sides of the tank now, seems they have thier territories worked out.so far.

The pond is 1100 gals right now. I'd have to say if the fish were all full grown they would more than likely consume about 100 lbs of shrimp every other day, and that would just maintain them. The fila has yet to eat. All the other fish have eaten. The transparent catfish are an unidentified Ageneiosus species that stays really small.

There are three tsn, 20", 19", and 13". Got them all here at local petstores in montana. Everytime they accidentally get one I scoop it up before anyone else can. I don't let montana fish keepers keep large catfish. There is not many people here equiped to keep such fish. I've rescued many fish here, but unfortunately most are eaten by my catfish. I still have 3 rescued plecos, 4 rescued oscars, and a rescued jag. They were all big already or they would have been eaten. Mostly huge goldfish are what I rescued, but most don't play nice with my hybrid lol.

Pictures say a thousand words, but as a quick update the big boy is healthy as ever and is eating tons, and growing tons. The rtc is growing out of control and eating way more than the big boy ever thought about eating. Found out today that my jurense only has one eye, but that doesn't stop him from finding his food, and he's now around the 10" mark. I have two imperial sharks, and two irridescent sharks growing like weeds. I have two SA bumblebee catfish that have grown from 1.5" to 3" in just 3 months. My smallest lima has grown from 1.5" to 5". He was free so it's all good. My neighbor has a rtc which might go into my tank if we can't get his tank built quick enough, but I want him to keep it for life. The jau is crazy huge at 12" now, and the Fila is 10" also. My MRTC and Smallest tsn were both moved to my pond. My only concern is they will not eat because of the huge rtc eating everything. Lumpy has been outgrown by bumpy, and Dumpy now lives with them and the rtc. So it's lumpy, bumpy, and dumpy all living together now.
Now for the dilema. I need to get the rtc out of the tank with all the mid sized cats. He has way outgrown them even though I got him way after them. He is approaching 25" if not already there, and is thick as all get out. He ate a half of a bag of shrimp and everyone else got the other half last night. I fear for my tsns while I am at work. My problem is the only other tank he can go in is the one with the bigboy. Looks as if the big boy couldn't eat him because his width, but I'm affraid he'll kill him like he did the planiceps. Here's what I am going to try, and let me know what you think. I remove the big boy to a small tub for 2 days, the mean while I put the rtc into the pond and let him establish a territory. Once the rtc is comfortable reintroduce the bigboy, and see what happens. My thing here is to stress the bigboy so that he doesn't want to kill the rtc at first sight, second thought is to rearrange his tank while he's gone so that he doesn't have a territory at first. Hopefully this will work, and it's my only option at this point as the wife has delayed my big tank building.
Enjoy the pics

Jau is 12", I can only imagine if I still had the other one how big it would be.
It's crazy how big the big boy is. That TSN has been for sale for over two years now if it's the one I think it is. They listed it first when it was 10" at $1500. I'd gladely take the paroon for you. I want one, but it's hella hard to get one unless it's shipped in. I got the imperials, and ID sharks cause they are common and they accidentally got the imperials.

I'm going to try it no matter what, just if he is aggressive I will move the rtc back to his tank, and go to plan "B". Plan "B" is to buy a 900 gal cattle trough. I don't like that plan because I will have to use the rest of the garage for building the big tank, and space will be very limited.

I think so too, just don't want a repeat of what happened last year with my planiceps the big boy was 32" and the planiceps was 26". He ripped it's tail off and it died. So an update on the rtc situation. My rtc is a little battered after being put into the pond with the bigboy. I removed the big boy, and weighed him. He weighed in at 38 lbs. I put him in a 50 gal rubbermaid feed tub for 8 hours to stress him. I then moved the rtc to his pond. After the rtc was settled in I moved everything around in the pond, and after the 8 hours I put the big boy back in. They were fine for the first day and I thought maybe they liked each other, but yesterday in the afternoon I brought the rtc out in the open for inspection and his fins are all tore up, but on the plus side it seems he won the battle of wits for the hiding place rights, and now has an established territory in the tank. Also seems that the rtc is not as stressed as the bigboy. Bigboy wouldn't eat anything, and the rtc ate a few shrimp last night so I am optimistic about the situation. Not like it would hurt the bigboy to go without eating for a while anyway. RTC might get a chance to catch up a little.

Yeah I wish. lol. Tnx
On another note the RTC had to go back to his origional pond due to the fact that the big boy shreaded his fins and bit his head pretty bad. I would just have him tough it out, but some of the damage is to his gill covers and I don't need him getting damaged gills. Everything else can grow back, but damaged gills kill!!!. I don't think he'll eat again for a while now, but at least he's safe. Can't say the same for his tankmates once he's healed up. Going to have to find a quick solution really fast. Guess I am going to have to go with the wife's plan for now and get the 900 gal cattle trough until later when we can afford to go all out on the big tank build.

Nice to see an update on all of your catfish Cliff. I haven't been around much lately but will throw in a little piece, my Piraiba is about the same size as yours maybe a tad smaller like 9" and growing slow but steady, I just got 2 ageneiosus sp cats from John this past week and they are doing awesome, Juruense is growing out with them, and my planiceps and hybrid rtc x tsn are growing out still in the pond with my piraiba and a smaller temensis. They look really nice. Hope that they grow into true monsters. Good to see an update from you. I see a lot of people that get into cats end up getting out after they see how fast and how large and aggressive some species can get, it's really nice to see someone sticking with it. Any aggression on that planiceps yet? Mine was mean as fire and would bite my hand when cleaning his tank.

Thanks,
I enjoy sharing and hope it encourages others to share. This thread was started as a way for everyone to watch my fish grow with me. Kinda like my mini fish journal. I'm a catfish guy through and through so it's rare to see me stray into threads outside here. I'd say 90% of all my posts are in the catfish section.
As a quick update my sweet wife decided to actually feed my fish while I was at work this time and did good, but she failed to remove any uneaten food from the tanks and they were super stinky with rotten shrimp when I got home. Needless to say massive water changes on all my tanks first thing and meds for my fila as he's got an eye infection. His tank was by far the worst as there was very rotten shrimp smell and a dead pleco by the time I got home. I love my wife, but she needs banned from the tanks, lol.
The big tank build is still in question, but I redid my design so that I can go quicker and cheaper. Here's a google sketchup for you guys of it. let me know what you think. 14' x 8' x 3.5'

No aggression problems on either of the planiceps I've kept. Mine is growing like a weed though, bought at about 3-4" and now is 12" in a few months. I think I picked it up near the end of march so 4 months it's grown 8 inches which is pretty good I think.
I'm about to move again and the 480 gallon pond that is set up here is probably moving with me to my apartment balcony on the first story and getting some hardcore insulation but if not the fish I'm growing out are small enough to live in the 240 for the next year until I can start the "real" pond construction or have a mega tank built at a more permanent residence :)

Yeah I hear you man. It's too bad you had to give up some of your cats, but at least they are living it up in a huge aquarium. Hopefully the pond will be awesome. Going to take me a few months though. Hopefully I can get it done before winter, that's the goal. I have a thread in the diy section that I had already started a while back for the origional design, but so much has changed since then. I could have went the easy route and bought a fiberglass tank at a supply store by here that is 2000 gals, but it's only 18" deep. That's just not deep enough. To me I am making mine almost bare minimum deep. It also costs $4000. For that kinda dough I can make mine awesome. lol

pretty excited I have all the wood for my tank now. Final costs for the tank minus heaters and pumps will be around $400. Not bad for a 3000 gal tank? Other things not included are lighting, filter, ect. Glass was free. Going to be fiberglassed and coated in sweetwater epoxy.

it was a used table top that's 1/2" thick. Too bad I accidentally broke it trying to cut it today though. Guess that gives me a reason to try and find larger glass panes and make this a true monster tank. Just don't know how I will fit that into the budget.

Oh yeah here are some updated pics, and there's also one of the tank in progress what you see is a 9' x 3' section. It's pretty much the left side of the tank. It this section is now swung out at a 90 degree angle to the wall in the pic and has another 2' added on as of this morning. There's also a pic of my rtc eating a perch that died during a fishing trip. There's a pic of my friend's kid with a bullhead she caught(didn't keep it). There's also a pic of the squirrel that was stalking me along the fence on the way to the garage.
I put in some pics of my biggest tsn which is currently outgrowing my rtc. Feeding time is really exciting lately. All the fish swarm the surface until gorged with food. Kinda scared to put my hand in their tank as they will bite my hands and arms looking for food. After they are all fed I can hand pet them without worries. Even the oscars.

hey guys here are some pics of my catfish for you to enjoy. I thought you guys might like an update so here they are. I know ahead of time you guys might warn me that my rtc x tsn will probably eat my tsn x blochii sometime in the near future, but I am not that worried. The biggest fish that I could get him to eat so far was a white sucker at 10". I stuff him with shrimp every other night. He also has never shown any aggression to him. The other fish eat pellets from the top after the lights go out. It is pretty funny to watch. I wish I had a night vision cam so that I could share it here. I also have included pics of my other catfish from my smaller tanks. My Sorubim lima has grown from 2 1/2" to 7 1/2" in just 3 1/2 short months. I might get him a companion sometime soon. Anyway enjoy and I am open to your comments! is that a redtail tiger shov??? pm me with answer pls.

He tried, but fat albert's head is too wide. I measured today and fat albert has a 6" wide head, and the big boy has a 8" wide head. Kind of why I seperated them. My plan now is to finish the big tank, put the smaller catfish in there over the next winter and next summer add the big boy. Gonna powerfeed the hell out of them all and hope for the best. I could do the reverse, but that huge tank for one fish doesn't seem right lol.
How do you move those giants?!?!?!?!
Simply net them out with a koi sock net that is 50", and 11" dia hoop. It holds water and is supposed to be less stressfull, but it's kind of a pain to move a 30+ lb fish, and 3 gals of water at the same time while the fish is thrashing about. I have used a large pillow case in the past. He's really tame so I can just scoop him up no problem fun happens after he's out of the water. lol

Great fish and nice setup. I did the same sort of thing when I had my big RTC that got about that size. Probably fight in not enough filtration. That is a big issue and big challenge with the big cats. Sounds like you are doing the right things. Disappointed to hear the TSN X RTC is 38" . I had hoped they stayed smallers. Will be interesting to see what mine does over time.
Thanks for sharing,
Jack

The big boy is probably closing in on his max size and even if it gets bigger chances are the growth rate isn't going to be nearly as ludicrous as all your other monster cats.
I wouldn't be surprised if you could move the big boy in before winter is over.

I think the big boy is maxing out, but that's not to say that he won't grow more. They grow their entire lives, it just slows way down. He still gets spurts every now and then, but I have noticed lately that he eats way smaller meals and still adds weight, but not much length. The RTC however is adding both, but he has even slowed down some. I'm gonna keep him well fed, and if I get this tank finished before winter I'll at least put all the smaller fish in it. After they are all large enough that I don't fear them being killed or eaten I will try out the big boy. Might be next summer.
Here is a link to the tank build for anyone who hasn't seen it. Thanks for everone's insights and thoughts.

there's the other side of this pond since it's 3' x 10', but they just all stay on one end. The only fish missing in the overall pic is the ACC. Doing water changes 2-3x per week now. I really need to finish the big tank. The big boy is in his pristine tank all by his lonesome. Too bad he tries to kill everything I put in with him. Funny how the rtc and mrtc get along with no problems except the mrtc steals a ton of food from the slower rtc, but when the rtc was in with the big boy all hell broke loose. Not much I can do unless I set up yet another pond which will take away from the big tank funds. I'm going to look around and see what I can find though. Might set up a small kiddie pool for now in the 400 gal range. The only reason I have that cattle trough set up is that the 1000 gal intex pool I had them in leaked to no end. I've never had one of the cattle troughs leak though. Might be some clearance pools I can get my hands on though. I have an extra pump or two. Would be easy to make a filter for the time being. Seems frustrating everthing takes away from the big tank build lol.

yeah, it's taking him a hella long time compared to others I've seen. His coloration is striking though. Since I've added about 25% hot dogs to his diet he's really got some color in him. Could just be him getting more mature though. I really wish I could keep him in the big boy's pond, but they don't play nice. The jau doesn't play nice either. I just moved him into the 75 gal as his next step, but he shredded the fins of my flash zebra, limas, and my stone cat. He'll go back into solitary today in his 55 gal pond. If I can keep fat albert growing at this pace for another month or two I might try him in with the big boy again. He's definitely the biggest waste producer in the tank. My 200 gal tank could be finished soon if I put my mind to it. That would help some. 350 gals seems really small when you have huge fish lol.

Just add filtration to this one and then worry about the Big Pond... Funds need to be dirrected towards that so you can free up the smaller ones that you already have not add more of them LOL (trust me I have the same problem)

I usually use a koi sock net, but the big boy will be too big for it to use it safely this next time. It's a 40" long net, but it's only 11" wide. made for show koi, but works great on medium sized catfish. Now though I am going to use a large pillow case! usually have to climb in the tank and wrestle him into a net.

Nice update on the cats but one ? How do you tell the ID sharks from the pangassius?
Redtailnobs
10-12-2008, 10:58 PM
The pangasius have a shorter distance from the tip of their snout to the base of their dorsal fin. They also have almost no lump on top of their head in comparison to the ID sharks which have a large lump right above their head. Not really large just slight, but the pangs have just a smooth head. The pangs are also much thicker at a large size than IDs. Most pangasius species look very similar at a small size. Even hard to tell adults apart unless you know what you are looking at. This is what Necrocanis is telling me anyway. He's sitting right next to me lol. I just using his computer to check things out!

rtn is right! They stuck out like a sore thumb when I bought them. The owner had them labeled imperial sharks, and when I started doing some research I found pics of baby pagasius pangasius, and that's exactly what it was. So I now have two species of pangasius, and plan on getting some Paroons sometime next year. Then I'll have three, and hopefully more than that in the long run.

Look the same to me also. As P pangasius comes from India and Myanmar i very much doubt that these fish came in with P Hypophthalmus, which is from south east Asia. My feeling is it a P Hypophthalmus, and just showing sexual dimorphism, larger fish with slight lump being female. :)

I'm not going to argue which is which anymore, that can be up to everyone else, but here's some awesome pics I've been getting of my cats the past week. There's some pics of my jau that are in my pg, but wanted to share them here also. Also some pics of the jur, and fila yawning. Think the fila might actually be a B. capapretum, but of course on other sites I got nothing but attitude for trying to help others and come up with the truth. lol. Oh well. Maybe one day the elusive filamentosum will be mine, but for now I'm convinced that this and the others shown earlier this year are capapretum. Thanks to another member on here for bringing the scientific discriptions to my attention, and after i just recently studied it a little closer, I found that mine actually is a capapretum. At this size the spots are two to four times the size of the eye in capapretum, and in filas of the same size the spots are less than half the size of the eye. Capapretum don't grow nearly as large, or as fast as filamentosum.:nilly:
