when a fahaka dies will it kill everything in the tank (that is, if you can get anything to live with it)? They’re poisonous, right?

I think they would only die if they ate the one organ that puffers contain is poisonous. If they ate his skin and stuff they should be fine. It is just the organ that is poisonous. Sorry can't remeber which one it is.

hmm... I have heard that SW puffers fowl the water and wipe out the entire tank if they are not taken out immediately. i was wondering if the fahaka would do that if it died when the owner was at work
well its like what honda said, as long as his poisonous organ was not touched or made in contact with the water is fine. but if a fish comes by and decides to try to eat it and punctures the slightest hole on the poisonous organ..well, consider the other fishes dead..good luck..i hope ur fahaka didnt die on u

I wouldn't worry, SW boxfish are the one that release toxins int the water. I have yet to see a nile puffer kill fish by dying.

i guess the question is, "is the toxin deadly like the SW or milder?" and "do you know from hearsay or experience?"
well what fish its size can really eat the fahaka?

I'd be more worried about the puffer going to work on the larger fish.

i was thinking about sticking a fahaka in with my dorado. i doubt i'll do it, not becuse i'm worried about the fahaka killing the dorado by biting it but because i think the dorado might harass the fahaka to death. If that happens I wouldn’t want to lose the dorado.
so does anyone have experience with a fahaka being ripped open after it dies? Is the poison potent enough to kill the rest of the fish?

The skin is too tough to bite open.

Fahaka's will not release toxins. My firend had one die of harassment from a clown knife. It was never picked at.
Tetrodotoxin is produced within the puffers by bacteria, which are acquired through food. This means that puffers raised in captivity do not contain tetrodotoxin, and therefore are not poisonous until they come into contact with the bacteria.

Their skin is poisonous also though, not just their organs. If a fish did take a bite out of a puffer, it would most likely die. If you value your fish, no matter what size it is, the puffer will probably kill it. A 4" fahaka can bite an 8" pleco in half--1 bite!

He'll be "touching" them, soon enough! You have all those monsters in a 4' tank? Wow, what are you upgrading to? They must be tiny!
