I just set up my 1st salt tank and I’m getting a Bursa Triggerfish and a Saddle Valentini Puffer I was wondering if anybody has keep these fish before and what I should expect.
I got a 90 G with lots of hiding space and two bio wheel 350s running the show.

Although I love the Bowheel 350b for fresh water, I am not so sure with salt. I lose a lot of salt on them in my brackish tank. Lukily in this tank it is not so bad, as natural brackish water varies as well.

I would likely not go with a HOB filter at all with salt, but I am sure people with salt experience will jump on this thread soon.

Best of luck on the salt venture

How much salt do you lose?

A valentini is a very good fish. You will love it! Most fish dont mess with them because they produce a poisin through there skin. I think that you are making a very good choice brother.

Since I dont actually check the SG in the brackish tank I have no idea.

I just add salt with partials so the water going in is at my max brack level.

I do get a serious buildup on & arround the filter, that I would consider an issue in a salt tank. especially with the tolerance that you will be looking for.

I suggest that if you want to run a hang on back filter system that you use aquaclear 300's or 500's. You will also need some powerheads, and about 100 pounds of live rock. The live rock and your powerheads are what really keeps your tank healthy, not the filters.

The fish you picked would not be recommended for a beginner but if you do your homework and study hard you will succeed.

Good luck.

JJ.

I actually think that you will have an easy time with the puffer but I am not sure about the trigger though, but if you do research than I think you will be alright. the valentini puffer hardly ever puffs out so I do not think that you will have problems with that. I would suggest being quick though when transfering from the bag to the main tank and you should be okay. Valentini puffers will eat anything.

I had a biowheel on my 10 gallon tank. Though I had it in a sump i didnt like it. If you have live rock then the biowheels are going to be competing with the rock for the benefical bacteria in your tank so i would tank them off. Also, lilstinker is right, the pads trap alot of the salt for sum reason. Rio is supposed to have a nice hang on the back filter but personaly i dont like to much of Rios products. Valentinis are swEEt.
