Of course you like the one in the middle, because it's an adult acestrorhynchus, one of the best fish around ;)

I really love my school of Payara all between 5 to 7 inches! 8 at the moment with 10 more coming next week! They are all the bottom one and seem to be growing fast! I have some of the redfined ones coming in also so i am hoping they dont fight. The school i have seem to be doing good, sometimes they do chase each other around. 125 with 100 bucks of hanging reptile vines seem to do good they all just hang under the vines. The complete school will be going into a 240. My question is does anybody know when its time to do the rabid fast cuurrent assilmation with massive powerheads lining one side of the tank. So far my biggest guy still never swims much, mostly hangs and picks off the endless supply of danios and guppys.

I'm not sure. I don't know if there is an exact size to move them in to a fast current. I would just give them one side with a lot of movement and another that is calmer. That way they can choose which side they would like to be on themselves. If you notice that they are all hanging out in the current, then you could start adding more.

Just curious, how many total are you planing on keeping in the end? Do you notice that they actually school together? I have one now and am considering getting more and was just wondering how they react to eachother. Let's see some pics of your huge school too!

i use to have three that looked alot like the ones at the bottom. what exactly are they called. when i bought them at the store they had them listed as vampire tetra. they got to be about 8-10 inches and i got an offer on them i couldnt refuse. a friend offered me a baby alligator for all three

What size of tank do you have your Vulps in? You are the first I have come across that has Vulps of decent size. I believe 12 in. is the largest living one I have heard of in a hobbyist aquarium.

The easiest way to tell the Hydros apart is the gill plate and adipose (sp) fin.

I think you could positively identify by just the fin.
Black/brown=Scomb
Red/Maroon=Tat
Bright orange=Armatus

Any one confirm this? (KRS)

I believe this to be fairly accurate. I have Vulps,Scombs, and Tats in the same tank. And I have drooled over enough Armatus pics to know they have VERY bright fins.

Not a really good characteristic to use to ID all species. I'd leave it as just one of many that stand out on armatus. I have owned a redtail that was purely silver and black. No red fins, no gold body, no color in adipose fin. The black blotches on the gill plates can be used to differentaite between Scombs (a round dot) and the other two (armatus and Redtails, which have a more crescent moon shaped black blotch). Scombs also bave black blotches where the pectoral fins meet the body, Armatus and redtails dont. Scombs tails are also a lot different that the other two, both in structure and color. Scombs have more of a rounded shape to their tails, and they have a grey base with a clear edge. Redtails and Armatus have more points on their tails. They also have a spine runs from the middle out. Tail color for redtails can vary a great deal, from yellow, to grey, to maroon (these are just a few of the color varients I personally have seen). Armatus seems to have a lot bigger tail in proportion to the other species. They also seem to share the common colors, which fade from a goldish color to a black band to a clear edge(when younger) or white edge(when older). It also appears that going from the smaller species (scombs) to the largest (Armatus) the overall mouth to body angle straightens out. Armatus are more streamline, while scombs heads tilt up the most. Redtails are somewhere inbetween. Armatus are a lot thicker boddied, then redtails, then scombs. Same with the teeth size, and aggression levels. Sorry I wrote this kind of fast. If you have any questions, or need me to clarify anything, don't hesitate to ask. Hope this helped.

Ok. I have come to the conclusion that price is the easiest way to tell them apart.......LOL.

Just one question.....Can you point me in the direction of an Armatus for sale that CAN be shipped to the middle of the cornfield everyone calls Iowa? I think I'de have better luck hunting down a Jackalope than getting an Armatus to Iowa. I've only talked to 1 person that was willing and it was going to be a little over $800 by the time it was done.

George of SharkAquarium has gotten them in the past. I know one other person, but he's on another forum. They won't let me type out the name of the website on here though.

You aren't limited. There are many online dealers that I'm sure would ship to you.

If you do order online make sure you have a QT tank set up. These fish do NOT ship well at all. I'de recommend having Cupremine, salt, and Primafix on hand.
