new indoor pond

so i have been designing my new indoor pond for awhile and all the suddon i want to change where it goes and size i can use everything that i have already bought but i will still have to buy more but if i change it how i want it...... instead of a big rectangle it will be a huge u shape in a different part of my basement... i cant figure out what to do i will draw a sketch and see what you guys think... u shape or rectangle

what are you going to house in this pond of yours? U shape seems interesting, will it be an actual U with both walls parallel or will it be more like a half circle?

it will be a U but i think i am gonna go with the rectangle because i can put a glass viewing window in it then.... and my aros and other large oddballs are going in it.....

you'll probably get a much better footprint from the rectangle! I'd round the corners if you could! This will help aid in lessoning fish damage. i have noticed that my rounded ponds the fish just follow the rounded corners, and in my rectangle aqauriums they sometimes run into them and damage themselves!

Query, are your rectangle tanks glass/acrylic?

Painted or clear?

Rounded corners are better for circulation too.

they are glass and clear, mostly fish run into them when spooked, but I have noticed the rounded corners are followed easier. They are unpainted, but I am thinking that would help them to see the wall in their way and avoid it! I am going to make a diy tank soon for smaller catfish so I might paint the bottom back and sides, but not sure yet. Still in the design phases right now. I want to make it acrylic, and somehow round the corners, but again I am not sure how this can be achieved in a homade tank. Maybe heating the acrylic and slowly bending it?

If your not sure about painting, how about limo widow tint? Just do a small test area first on an extra piece. Some tint is non-removeable.

Your right about the acrylic. Just critical the you keep it square so the 2 edges are parallel when they meet and the sides are flat for the bottom. Use a form for the radius you want for the corners, set the completed side(s) on the acrylic bottom and seal. Trim off excess and use a router with a follower bearing to finish the edge. Make sure you use masking tape where the bearing is going to rub if you took off the protective paper on the acrylic.

hmmm, sounds interesting. Not sure exactly when I am going to do this tank, but it won't be for a couple of months anyway! I am going to come up with some concept sketches. I will post them up in the diy section when I have them ready!

Conceptual drawings ? Forget that.. You build something-if it works-then you make a drawing of it ! If it doesn't work, no one knows and it's never happened or is spoken of.

Why do you think nobody has pictures of they're construction projects? Hhmmm? Do you really think they broke/loaned/couldn't find their camera. :ROFL:

Oh Yea, and that rule about 'measure twice / cut once' sure didn't come from a lumber yard, ya know..

ha well its already decided i am going with the rectangle the concrete is already poured i just have to seal it buy the window and install it and fill it up....

rottbo-I looking to use a pond as you know but I rent right now, would this pond be moveable or something I need to "build" into my house. I don't plan on pouring cement or doing anything drastic.
