I just tested my water and everything turned out fine except the ammonia was up a little at 0.25. I just fed my JD some live guppies and was thinking that could have caused the rise in ammonia. Should I wait and see if it goes down or do a water change? If so how much of a water change?

When it comes to water changes, I'm not affraid to fit in an extra 1-2 a week..I do 25%-40% water changes everytime....2, maybe 3 changes a week....One 25% water change per week is the ideal for most setups....Good Luck..........

Yeah, just do a water change. I do 50% every 3 days and I don't have any problem with ammonia or anything.

Make sure you have adequate biological filtration as well.

yeah if you have no nitrates or nitrites, i'd definately question my biological filtration. other than that if your JD doesnt eat live plants, add a couple and do a 25-30% water change. (basically i'm agreeing with everyone else.) good luck.

Thanks you guys I just completed a 40% water change and every thing is back on track.
water change is only temporary.
you need to allow some time for your filtration system to step up.
How long has the tank been running? Remember you'll always get high levels of organic waste like ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in the beginning.
