Would it, if at all, affect ph up or down you think? Going to add a giant 40lb piece in my tank...

is this to use it as a buffer? or you just worried it will have a huge effect?

it will lower your PH if you don't soak it first.. the tannins will leech out and turn your water brown and depending on your kh can lower your ph alot or a little..Most likly it will not affect it much especially if you do frequent water changes. I do recoment soaking it in a big rubbermaid tub with hot water for a couple of days though.. You will be amazed at how brown your water can get if you don't.

I am just worried about it making a dramatic affect on the tank. I have soaked it for 24 hours. Originally the water was hot but it has cooled down now. The water in the tub is very brown. I do 50% water changes every 3-5 days so I think it will be ok.

it wont make a dramatic difference. i boil mine (or as close as i can if they are big) and then soak it for a day or two. no tanning, no ph change.

I think boiling is the best option, you can use salt water too.
