or are some of our members alittle TOO dependent on MFK for advise and very single little g*d friggin dang issue/problem???

like if they have a basic simple problem with there fish, instead of analysing the situation themselves and thinking on there own the first impulse is to (after panicing) jump on the computer and log onto mfk :screwy:

just an observation as im seeing these threads more and more everyday

That may be the case. But a lot of us are at different levels.

It is always good to get another opinion or benefit from others experiences so you can't really fault someone there. They really might not know.

Take notice of the little pedestal you perched yourself up on - where else would you like for these folks to go when first starting out? Its how a site (like MFK) grows when you help the newbies regardless if the question is beneath you, your talent and time....

i'd rather answer the same simple question 50 different ways than scroll through 200 post in a thread that are simply.

"Pics?!"

either that or i have to see if i can set it up to diplay 50 posts per page instead of ten so i'm not always clicking next to get to the relevant information.

That and i took a break from the board for almost a year simply because i got really tired of the

"my fish can eat your fish" type threads...i'd rather help someone than read that crap...yeah someones rhom might eat my lungfish but a shot glass of the ammonia i have in the garage will turn your collection into a bad smell....so its really irrelevant to those searching for information. (and no i'd never punish someones animals simply because i'm annoyed)

As it is i wont even look at a thread that remotely sounds like i'm going to get "my snakehead ate a rat"....while living in a area where they are banned its asking for F&W to get bored and surf the net more.

Back to the topic at hand however...i'd rather someone ask a question than let an animal die because they dont want to feel like they are being a pest or risking a blow to their ego by asking a question. Its hard for me to ask sometimes because i've got 20 years of fish keeping behind me and i like to think i'm good at it but reading posts from Oddball and Alfon and i know damn well i still have a VERY long way to go to become truely competent at it and even they make mistakes. I think my fishkeeping is 80% luck 10% preparation and 10% the fishes desire to live even when my mistakes.

I can see the annoyance of it but its a necessary evil when online.

If i sound a bit rambly i'm a tad muddled from a weeble bit too much vodka last night.

i don't even know what to say. I'm shocked at Del's attitude. He's always been a helpful member. After reading this thread, it reminds me of other fish boards which have this stuck up attitude towards n00bs. If posts like that annoy you just don't read them. You don't have to belittle people who use this site the moment a problem occurs.

sqratch-I don't think that DeLgAdO is trying to belittle people, he is EXTREMELY helpful and

willing to give info. I think he was just saying that he was getting kind of annoyed by the

number of stupid questions that aren't life threatening, or that they could figure out by

This site may be just another information source that people are using. Just because it is a simple question or concern, doesn't mean that people can't research it and use multiple sources. I know that when I have an issue, I will research in books, on other sites and boards, AND on here. Asking a question on here doesn't necessarily mean that it is a person's only option and that they are dependent on this site.

I would encourage asking any question regarding any concern, even if it has been addressed before. If the answers end up benefiting the animals, then IMO it's worth it. If reading those types of thread irritates someone, then that person needs to be more selective about the threads that they read. After all, it is not necessary to respond to every thread or post on here.

:iagree: I was going to say something very similar a 5,794(at the moment) feedback. Come on man you offer advice all the time there are people in this world that need reassurance. I am an Engineer I work with a bloke that has been doing it 10 years more than me. and I have been doing it a while he often phones me up to ask me a question when I say to him come on you don’t need me to tell you the ans to that he has said to me " it just seams so simple and so obvious it cant be right" people some times need reassurance and on here you have a wealth of information and knowledge. May I end by saying

“A truly wise man always has more questions than answers”

Oddball

I not only invite any type of question, I also always hope to receive the questions BEFORE a small problem becomes a major problem. I really hate having to tell someone..."Sorry, but that pacu is really going to need a tank larger than 55 gals in the very near future". Or, "Mixing frontosas and discus is not a good idea due to vastly different preferences in pH levels".
If there was one thing I'd like to see of all members asking questions it would be; "I've already performed a search on the site and found some info but, I have an additional question". That's only because I know there's already a ton of valuable info that's already been posted. And all it needs is for someone to perform a key word search to find a gold mine of info.

Its also a positive indication that our members trusts us and comfortable with

This site and others like it have taught me more about fishkeeping than all the books or magazines I have ever read. I personally don't have that many posts because I don't want to ask the dumb questions, but hearing the comments on this thread it apears that my fears of bothering the other members are unneaded and I think I will start asking when I am unsure. I will though continue to search the old posts and learn from the repetitive unneaded questions asked by the other members. I hope I don't get acused of being a lurker. Good fishkeeping to all.

The way I see it is like this. What if we are the only people that person can relate to regarding the hobby, their wife, husband, parents or kids may not share their excitement over the issue they are having. They come here to get advice, knowledge and even comfort in any situation. I would even answer a question as crazy as " how many gallons is a 10 gallon tank"? These are my friends away from my house on here and appreciate evry question and answer.

Everyone is very helpful, and in way I really respect and look up to the members who can come in and talk about their massively huge tanks, and at the same time be humble and nice enough to help the people who are just getting their fingers wet in the hobby and are so excited about the gravid spot on their guppy darken up. Its helpful answers to stupid questions that can really keep people in the aquarium world. You are all really great people. I learn a lot here, and occasionally I even learn from those "stupid questions". I have probably asked a few of those, but look at it this way. When we haven't been in the hobby very long, we aren't 100% SURE on a lot of things, except that we love the fish we keep. It could be a simple matter, but if done incorrectly it could lead to the death of our friends. Plus, yes, there ARE a lot of websites on the internet offering loads of information, but IMHO I'd rather hear it from you guys. Just being members at this site proves that you are really into the hobby and if you can keep great big awesome fish, you probably know your stuff. I'd take that over a website written by someone who might not even own a 10 gallon any day of the week. I HEART you guys :)

Okay okay I get it. I think whats going on here is that people are reading the first post and reading it in a way it wasn't intended, and then rather than reading the subsequent posts (sorry, another big word... p.S. "contemplating" means thinking about) to clarify, they are jumping to the last page. I understood what Del meant - and yes, it probably would be best if before asking a very basic question, us new people would search this site to see if it's already been asked instead of asking it again. I agree, and will make sure I do that in the future :) I apologize if any of my newbie posts annoyed anyone - especially the one regarding tanks in apartments b/c I found about three just like it a day later. I dont know about other folks but ill ask a question While om seaching for answers in other windows.Im on dialup so Ive seen the answer pop up in the forum while still waiting for other pages to load.
I also post stuff just to see if anyone has anything to say about it,mfk is kind of like having a bunch of folks in your fishroom without tracking mud on the kitchen floor:ROFL:
Think about it if a friend that also keeps fish stopped by while you were having a problem youd ask his opinion just to be talking about it while you were working on it.

Ive been on forums where the mods are more active in telling people to search before asking, dont make unneccesary threads and dont post unless you have sound advice that agrees with the mods advice, and believe me THEY SUCK!
MFK rules:headbang2
I hear you it can get old reading the same questions but when I feel that way I take a few days off then jump back in.Its better than the alternative which seems to be cranky mods telling people to shut up all the time.

Im fairly new here and i know i probably dont have much credit in what i say but this is what i think...

When i first joined i noticed Del giving A LOT of great advice. I mean A LOT. And that was great for me because I'm a noob when it comes to Aros. But lately I've been reading more and more of his posts and it seems like they have been written in a way that makes it seem like he's looking down on other members. Or in a way that may offend other members. I dont know if its just me or what, but thats just my opinion....I know he probably means well but maybe do it in a nicer way...or somethin....i dunno...like i said, just my honest opinion.

KEEP THE GOOD ADVICE COMING THO DEL. (just nicer....:screwy:)

I never meant to attack Del. I know he's a VERY helpful and active member of this board. Which is why it shocked me to read this thread. But i get it now.

I think I know what Del is talking about.

Say I have a case of ich. Instead of coming here and asking advice, I would sit for a minute and ask myself "What have you told other people to do for the last two years?".

Is that what you mean? Experienced people asking after their own advice?

People in need need reassurance. There is nothing wrong with that. It is often easier to deal with other poeple's problems than it is with your own.

I finally figured out what is happening! Big DEL is such an evil genius that he started this thread because he knew that the participation level would skyrocket! :naughty:  I can't believe he has so much control over us all! Wow , don't we all really feel like a bunch of noobs right now? But seriously, with nearly 5000 posts it's obvious the guy helps us all out with his advice, I can understand the intentions of the thread, I mean he would probably have about a million posts right now if he kept trying to answer ALL of our basic questions, I mean he isn't Superman( OR GUPPY!) you know!

I will not attack Del....I will hug him. And thank him for ALL of the advice that he has contributed to this greatawesomefantastical site.
I myself have probably posted some stupid questions, but not trying to do so. And I have learned alot from everyone here.

Keep up the good work guys and girls!
