soft shells are cool, easy to keep and very happy to remove the tips of your fingers.

Not meaning to step on the toes of those of you who sell, but.....I would get a turtle from a rescue. Water turtles are becoming the disposable pets of the 21 century, just like boas and iguanas. People buy them because they are tiny and cute, and then in several years they get tired of it, or they feed it wrong and it gets sick, or whatever and then they are given up. If you are really serious and researched, then give one of the thousands that need homes a place to live. I work with a rescue service and we get soooooo many in, including babies that we simply cannot take in any more. If you live near Ohio, we could talk about getting you one, two, ten.......LOL

Also,

If you want a baby turtle, first off look at the local laws. In many places, turtles under 4 inches are illegal (although you can get arround this for "science reasons")

Second, water turtles are not "easy". They are dirty, smelly, and have alot of health problems. Be sure to research before you get a turtle or animal of any kind.

These turtles will need a settup with a uvb light or they will suffer a long-term illness caused from the lack of it. These lights must be within 9" of the turtle to work, are expensive, and wear out every 6 months.

Most of these turtles will live 50 years or more, and they need lots of food and vet trips occasionally. These guys are a long-term commitment. make sure you can have them in your will as some turtles in general live over 100 years.

why are turtles under 4" illegal ive seen signs about this at several pet stores but do not understand why a small turtle would be illegal

The athorities figured that young children would stick their baby turtles in their mouths. I don't remember doing that?
